18th Session

General Summary

The three party members spend the night in adjacent cells in the tower. The following morning, they are interviewed in succession by a person who does not introduce himself, but has the bearing of one in charge. He asks questions about their backgrounds (specifically, connection to Esteleth), and does not seem entirely satisfied with the veracity of the answers, though he makes it clear they are not his top concern. He also reveals that Miletus betrayed Claymore to the orcs, though it’s not clear whether he is just saying it to test the party’s reaction. After he leaves, there are sounds of a mass meeting, and then a confrontation at the town square. Brandon attracts the guards’ attention, and fells one with a spell, but retreats into the room, where the guards lock him up again, and retreat downstairs. Brandon melts off the lock in his room with a fire spell, and cannot get out, but Adrie, who has been creeping around the tower in spider form, enters his room, transforms, and blows the door off. The two descend downstairs, and find a chaotic scene: Harper insurgents, led by Predicant Lorenz, have taken over the arsenal, and taken the town guard prisoner. They get the keys, free Aster, and then retrieve their belongings from Beyert’s cabinet. They have a brief conversation with Lorenz, who is busy bringing the town under his control. He says that out of respect for the trio’s attempt to aid one of the Harpers on shipboard the previous day, his people will give them until the end of the day to leave the town freely. They then pay a visit to Lainel Coronnim at the other end of town, and Adrie delivers to her the book from Solonor of Neverwinter. After Aster surreptitiously flashes her a White Hand sign, she tells them that she feels unsafe in town under the new rulers, but will remain to protect her people. When she learns that they are seeking Miletus, she tells them that he has gone to stay with them in an effort to keep them from attacking the town. She also asks them to pass along a message, if they see him, that the shop is safe, for now. Finally, she tells them that Miletus and his companions learned that the source of the disease is subterranean, and that the elves and the White Hand set the orcs and humans against one another because they don’t want the human colonists to learn the secret of the land of Gethen. The party then leaves through the partially destroyed gate, and go to a nearby burned-out farmhouse to discuss plans. There, they are set upon by a group of armed strangers speaking an unfamiliar tongue…
