August
My father Oliver Morris was a Sailor on board a ship called the Abbey where he met my birth-mother; An ambitious Elven woman named Allora Ambrose who, according to Dad, wanted nothing more at the time than to adventure. Allora’s dream was quelled by the job she held; she was to pay back the captain of the Abbey with ten years' labour for theft of something or other she stole from him. As long as she did good work in exchange, he would not tell anyone of her little misadventure. Three years into her employment is when she met my father, they sparked instantly, according to what I learned it was more like a wildfire. Everything they did was always fervent, their love, their work, and unfortunately their fights as well. After 8 years together, it was no surprise to anyone that it didn’t work out in the end, anyone but my father. He was heartbroken that the woman he found his love with and who had birthed their child not a month prior up and left as soon as her contract with the captain was over. Apparently her passions never wavered over those ten years. She wanted adventure and when she saw a chance to be free, she took it.
My father had to retire from the ship he served on after that. A ship was no place for a child and Dad decided he would take what money he had saved up to buy a boat and open a one ship private fishery on the coast of Ammet. Years passed and my father found love again, a retired navy ship Quartermaster named Charlie who settled down in the city years ago. He and my Dad worked hard to keep ends meeting, luckily Charlie had a retirement fund that kept the lights on when the fishery was struggling, but that only lasted so long.
In childhood August turned to petty theft to help their fathers pay for things to stay afloat, causing the local kids to bully and ostracize them. They saw Sans being Bullied as well but to no fault of his own and they lept into action to help. This led to Sans and August becoming good friends that watched each other's backs.
I was 13 when I overheard Odd (a nickname for Charlie that started as a joke) tell Dad about the money running dry. The fishery was hardly able to keep a good crew and I was worried for us. So I hatched a plan to help, I would take trinkets and coin from the other kids in the area and sometimes even adults if I was feeling brave. All going to my fathers to use for money and it didn’t take long before the kids caught on, putting a target on my back as a thief with the local children, getting me into my fair share of scraps, well- less of scraps and more like beatings. It wasn’t until I was around 15 when I met Sans, a fellow child catching the rough end of the stick with the local kids, but to no fault of his own. He got his because he looked different, the story goes he washed up on shore one day and his mother and father just took him home. Blue skin and green hair, he was different alright but not deserving of the attacks. One day I saw two kids trying to corner Sans. He could hold his own one on one but I knew they weren’t going to play fair so I didn't either. After that me and Sans were inseparable, he looked past my less than noble decisions and for that I was loyal to him. We got into scraps together a lot over time, got good at working together, I had a silent dream that we would grow up to leave this port town and travel the world like my birth-mother wanted. Well at least I did till he went off to the army. His dad used to be in the army and Sans always had a chip on his shoulder. He thought if he went off and fought for everyone they would respect him more. So off he went, leaving me in this city to figure it out alone.
Next few years were a haze of bad ideas and worse decisions. Now an adult my petty thievery would get me into much worse trouble, so I decided to work for my Dad and Odd. It didn't pay well, not that I was wanting money from my already struggling family, but I wanted to save up coin to one day leave this place. So I turned to gambling, and that was just as lucrative. A constant battle with luck forced me to turn to cheating and lying, even stealing when I had to break a debt. I always gave my fathers a majority of my earnings, and as always I kept them in the dark about its origin. But they were smart men, and they heard the same rumors everyone else did, about August Ambrose the thief.
When Sans went off to the army, August turned to work for their fathers in the Fishery waiting to save up money to one day leave Ammet. Not wanting to take money from the already struggling business their fathers ran, they turned to gambling with the bits of coin they had.
