Louai Island Legend

Louai Island has long been mostly deserted by sentient beings since its discovery. The island itself appears perfectly safe upon first glance, and attempts have been made to settle it. These attempts have all failed however to various reasons. This given rise to the the Louai Island legend, a myth, or perhaps more accuratel series of myths describing supernatural occurrences, monsters, and other terrors living on the island, making it inimical to sentient life. These legends are longstanding, but have slowly started to erode with time as small settlements have been established on the coast. However, the Legend itself persists and even in these relatively successful settlements, there is an air of nervousness and timidity that can't be found in many other places.   The oldest of these legends tell of a great beast haunting the dark forests of this island. The beast is said to seek out sentient beings that intrude upon its domain, and entrap them. The beast uses its magics to confound intruders making it impossible for them to navigate the thick forests, and overwhelm their senses driving them mad. The great beast is said to toy with those who intrude upon its domain, driving groups against one another, and often subtly encourages them to kill each other. It is said that in their crazed state the beast finally descends upon its surviving victim and takes it into the trees. Lastly, legends say that the great beast is the ruler of the island, claiming all of Louai for itself, and that it spreads its forest further and further each year to consume the whole island. Eventually, it is believed, the beast will swallow the whole world with its forest.   Other legends are also told of supernatural entities living on the island. Beside the great beast the second speaks of spirits haunting the Louai. These spirits whose origins are unknown, travel the length of the breadth of Louai wailing as they go. It is said that any town or settlment they happen upon vanishes, buildings people, animals, all disappear. Those who are consumed in this way join the wailing chorus in its eternal march. The last frequently discussed myth speaks of a flock of murderous birds that are known to waylay and consume solitary travelers.
