Telegraph

Founded in Bharata via a surge in both magical particles and a good supply of useful metals, this system of communication combines what we conventionally call "carrier pigeons" and "telegraphs." The birds fly along a length of magical particles to deliver cables to their destined locations. The birds carry little capsules on their legs which tell both the intended recipient of whatever they are bringing and the message itself, though the cable is what lets you hear it if you listen really carefully. Upon the creation of this invention, it was named the naunir-sandesh, a portmanteau of the Hindi words for "message" and "navigator." Ships traveling around the world but relatively close to shorelines could transport the technology rrather easily and quickly, so special percautions were put in place. If the birds were taken to a location not promised in a contract, they were obligated to fly away immediately, with a compass hidden in their feathers that allowed them to detect and determine this. Messages carried on the cables were vanish as soon as the birds reached their designated location, meaning that even if a police investigation had to be conducted, you could only track messages via the beginning and end point stations. The invention of trains came hand-in-hand with this invention since both utilized the same cable types and station locations. The birds were much faster than the trains, though - a train in this world could not go more than 30 miles and hour, where as a pigeon can go at least twice that fast on average. One could send their calling card by telegraph and be welcomed into their intended host's home by teatime. The great limit of this invention is, of course, that the Atlantic is an immense expanse far too great to allow for such forms of communication. Thus, most of the other side of the world must rely on pony express.
