"Earth 33-B"

Powers are fragments of truths from beyond this world. Someone pushed beyond their limits, whether to heights of glory or depths of despair, will occasionally have a flash of insight which is swiftly forgotten, gaining superpowers soon after. These people, the gifted, first emerged in the late 1400s. Over the centuries, their numbers grew and their talents increased in strength and variety.
And all over the world, unrest rose as well. Some thought that powers were divine answers to sincere prayers and the gifted were to be revered for having caught the gods’ attention. Others thought that powers were evil manifesting itself through a weak spirit and the gifted were to be purified- or exterminated.
Regardless of whether the gifted were admired or reviled, they were used. Then a disaster involving several gifted started the only global war the world had ever known- and ended it.
Twenty years later, the Great War is still fresh in people’s minds. The gifted are tolerated in many countries but not accepted. Some work for the government in special departments, others join the military and police as personnel or special civilian officers. Many more prefer to keep their abilities private, using their powers for ordinary, everyday matters.
A small number, however, saw for themselves a higher cause after they glimpsed the higher truths which formed their powers. Like their counterparts in centuries past, they gather allies to themselves. Unlike their counterparts, they plot and war against one another in the shadows, striving to be the ones who change the world.
And with the rise of new superheroes and supervillains, a second Great War may well loom on the horizon...
