Grukrid

The Grukrid is strange and dangerous denizen of the swamps of Glenerene. They often induce dread upon sight of the creature, or rather smell as they produce a noxious and disgusting odor similar to that of death. They are a rare creature to encounter but the few encounters that have been reported are horrifying and often tragic.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Grukrid are enormus but hard to spot creatures as their skin resembles the wood of the trees of their habitat. They also tend to cover themselves in debree in the water such as algea, mud, muck, vines, and leaves.   They have large heads that resemble the average snapping tortoise. In fact they resemble shell-less tortoise in build in general, though much larger and faster. They grow to a size of roughly 3.5 feet tall and about 4 feet long. Their jaws are capable of open about 1 foot wide as well.

Genetics and Reproduction

They are egg laying beasts that typically bare 5 eggs at a time.

Growth Rate & Stages

Hatching tends to take around a year and the young are left on their own after the eggs are laid. They are considered fully mature only at 10 years old.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Unlike the tortoises they resemble the Grukrid is a carnivorous creature that typically eats fish and reptiles that wander into their territories.

Behaviour

An interesting fact is that despite 5 eggs being laid at a time usually only 1 young Grukrid survives. This is due to the fact that the Grukrid is canabalistic as well as the abundance of creatures who will eat their eggs. In addition if more than one do make it to hatching then they typically fight for dominance and only one survives.

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

They are effectively blind though they have amazing sense of smell and hearing which makes them effective hunters regardless of their blindness.
