Rainbow Yaxte

The Rainbow Yaxte are incredibly intelligent birds that are often trained and kept as messengers. As they are one of the fastest avian species in Glenerene it make communications easier and faster than using pigeons or others. They are also noted for their beautiful songs and colorful feathers as well making them a common pet for many.

Basic Information

Anatomy

They grow to about 32-37 cm long with a 64-72 cm wingspan. They have long needle like beaks and are most noted by their coloration. Their feathers are very long and tend to fan out in a large crown behind their heads as well.

Genetics and Reproduction

They tend to have their mating season in early spring and lay up to 10 eggs at a time. The eggs take roughly a month to hatch.

Growth Rate & Stages

Hatchling:

This stage occurs immediately after hatching in which the chicks are helpless and are completely nest bound. Lasts about a week on average.  

Nestling:

This is the stage where they begin hopping around some and gain some level of freedom, they are still incapable of flight and hunting though. Lasts about 2 weeks.

Chick:

At this stage they begin to experiment with their wings and become capable of leaving the nest on their own for a short time. They begin to learn to fly as well. Lasts 2 weeks.  

Feldgeling:

They have become confident enough to fly short distances from the nest and to begin to hunt on their own at this point in their life cycle. Lasts 3 weeks.  

Juvenile:

They separate from their parents and start to build nests of their own, they are fully independent at this point, though not quiet fully mature. Lasts about 2 to 3 months.  

Adult:

Full maturity has been reached and they find a partner of their own and begin to build families of their own.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Their diets consist of nectar and small insects. Making them a rather uniqe bird in their ability to feed off of both.

Behaviour

They are known to be incredibly intelligent creatures capable of understand complex commands and recognizing names and faces. Their speed also allows them to out run most predators and therefore makes their job as messengers viable, while their gentle nature lends itself to their status as favored pets as well.

They are generally known for their speed about all else with the ability to reach speeds of 240 mph.
