Secret of the Balance

We bring balance where there is none
— Unknown member of the Balance
The members of the balance don't always know each other, so have numerous ways to identifying themselves to each other. The most obvious and most common is that of a copper pin of a set of scales, with nothing on but unbalanced to one side or the other, to show the fact they view the status quo is not balanced. To most its just an unusual decorative piece on individuals, clothes, hair or bags. Nothing but a curious item, but for thoses in the known realise it may mean the wearer is a Balance member and certain phrases and codes can be used to confirm the fact.   There really no standarised look of these items, they are each made by different crafts people across the Empire, at the request of individual members of the the Balance, other than being made of copper as a cheap material that either the poorest members of the Balance could afford, the fact there no standarised look means less likely that the organisations of the Crane Imperium will pick up on them as signs or anything other than a strange decortive item.
Show spoiler
The problem is those organisations know of the balance and its curious piece of jewellery, and the only reason they not move on it is because they want all the trouble makers at once so use those pins to discover all who interact and who are potentially members, one night soon many members will disappear unless something changes

Rarity
Pins are all the rage in the Imperium both by the low and high born members of the society wear them, but that of a simple set of scales is probably not the most likely item to be used, specially in the noble houses, and made of copper either less so.
