Journal: On Memory Storms

It hurts my head to think about. This series of journals represent the memories of one Elf, capturing the memories of others, on a subject of Storms that are, themselves, made up of memories.
— A Rolighav Traveler, deep in his cups.

History

Disillusioned with the Empire, almost 200 years ago a recluse of the Sharizaad Elves by the name of Lewitt Aleik took up a lonely residence in the hills of what is now Northern Rolighav. He was obsessed with learning about and understanding everything he could pertaining to the strange and beautiful mystically-infused storms that raged across the plains from time to time; phenomena he would eventually come to describe as "Memory Storms" over the course of many years of study.

Construction

Lewitt's journal was constructed of basic materials, not unlike those found in any other journal. It displays not even the slightest hint of magical properties. What stands out about this particular journal though, is the love and attention that was poured into its construction. Lewitt took the time to carefully dye the bindings with blues and purples, much like the storms they document. The construction of the book itself is as much, if not more, of a work of art as the years of knowledge captured within.

Organization

To turn the pages of Lewitt's On Memory Storms, is to follow one Elf's obsession over the course of four decades. Day after day after day. Lewitt was unshakable in the pursuit of his dream to better understand the forces at work. As a journal, there is no formal organization to the document. However reading through his progress over time one can begin to see broad themes emerge.

Theme I: Collection & Hypothesizing

Early in the journal, the reader follows page by page as Lewitt travels what is now modern Rolighav, capturing detailed first-hand, eye- witness accounts from residents on when and where the storms had appeared, as well as what they had seen. He was meticulous in capturing times and dates, and spent much of his downtime theorizing and hypothesizing the nature, causes, and purpose of the storms.

Theme II: Analysis & Predictions

As the number of first-hand witnesses dwindled, Lewitt began pouring back over his initial body of collected knowledge. His writing transitions in this second thematic section to capture the observations and patterns he identified in studying his earlier notes. From those patterns, he began to concoct methods, both magical and mathematical, to try and predict future times and locations of additional storms. Years in the formulation, his devotion finally pays off with him being able to successfully predict a Memory Storm's appearance.

Theme III: Stormchasing

Once he unlocked the code to prediction, Lewitt spent the rest of his years chasing down the very storms he'd spent so much effort trying to understand. This final theme carries the thrill of adventure, riding alongside an Elf as he captures his dream, chasing Memory Storms across the land. While he devoted separate journals to the specific memories found in any given storm, he continued to write here about his travels. He also corrected his earliest hypotheses and improved the prediction accuracy of the strange contraptions he had designed.
