Synagrav Peninsula (sĭn′ə-grăv)

I don't give a damn if the captain think's you can make it! I grew up on these waters! Set your heading for Ag'yajiri port. Keep those trees to the port side of the ship. And whatever you do, don't let the wind or current push us south off this line unless you want run aground. That vegetation is not passable!

Geography & Ecosystem

From the southeastern-most coast of Al'Jymoor juts a long finger of salt marsh separating the Gulf of Vyndria from Danya Harbor. It spans roughly 80 miles (128km) east-west, and 180 miles (289km) north-south. At its furthest tips the land rises barely 52 feet (15m) above sea level, but as one nears the north-south mid-line it dips to a mere 13 feet (4m) above sea level. Due to the low-lying nature of the peninsula, ocean tides and waves regularly flood the lowest portions, leaving naught but tall ocean grasses and squat trees with densely-woven roots peeking from the ocean's ever-shifting surface.   When the tides recede, the grounds of the Synagrav are nutrient rich, silty mud flats held tight by the roots of water-loving, salt-tolerant flora. It is uneven and difficult to navigate by foot.

Inhabitants

Though the Synagrav Peninsula is largely uninhabitable due to the recurrent flooding, there is a single city seated at the southern end of the region. Known as the sharizaad elf town of Bahrboj, this community of roughly 1,700 has learned to expertly read the comings and goings of the tides and the weather. As the tide recedes, residents are free to collect the abundance of life that appears: fish trapped in the remaining pools, insects, worms, and shellfish. It is not uncommon to see small, flat-bottomed boats carefully navigating the area on calmer days.

History

Prior to the settling of Bahrboj, around year 240 of the First Age, another group of elves attempted to settle on the northernmost tip of the Synagrav. Their concept was to build an elevated city on thick wooden columns, architected with the expectation to allow the water to rise, pass through the city, and drain quickly (vice standing against the ever-present forces of nature). However, obtaining and transporting proper construction supplies such as lumber to the peninsula was exponentially slower than anticipated. After long delays and setbacks, the project was finally scrapped.

Very evocative writing! I love the mental picture of the boats navigating the shallows. Well done Koragath!
