Episode 2 - The Great Escape
General Summary
The party left the Aspis Consortium compound, which had been cleverly hidden away in the basement of the World of Spice. With an injured Angard in tow, Shen suggested they get off the street and head back to the room he had procured at the Sack Shack, an inn that looked as sad as it sounded. A strategic move on the young Pathfinder’s part, selecting the location after his group was pinched, suspecting that no one would look for him there.
Once the group had crammed inself into Shen’s room, Angard revealed that he had hid the box in a small town outside Riddleport, the village of Halashire, or Magepoint as it was now known. He was not about to give the exact location of the box, but he would gladly hand it over once they delivered him there. He claimed to have had negative dealings with Pathfinders in the past, and didn’t trust them. The only reason he had hoped to become a Pathfinder himself was that he heard they made good coin. He’d hoped to provide a better life for his daughter, and more importantly, himself. By selling the box he thought he could accomplish the same thing with a little less effort. Live and learn.
After he stole what to this point had been described only as “the box”, the thief made his escape from Absalom and hopped aboard a ship to Oppara. Wanting to put as much distance as he could between himself and the Society, Angard stowed aboard another ship that ended up going to Riddleport. The trip took about a month, which oddly seems to be outside the timeline that Shen was given as far as when this item was stolen.
The party set up a watch inside Shen’s room to keep an eye on the prisoner. At one point during the night, Sir Godric thought he saw something pass by the window of their second floor room, but could find nothing. The rest of the evening passed without incident.
The next day, the party took a carriage to the Bastion. Renado and Dhanolis took Angard and secured him while the group ran some errands around Korvosa. Sir Godric went shopping. Alyuin told the church she was going to be gone for a bit. Valarius visited his mother, who gave him an arrow and a sash that his father had left for her before he left and never came back. Shen and Sikali secured passage for the six of them aboard the Mighty Maiden for 600gp.
Back at the Bastion, Renado admitted that the evidence of corruption that the group had found within the Aspis Consortium was disturbing. He was going to go after the corrupt officials. Meanwhile, Dhanolis had taken it upon himself to interrogate Angard. He confirmed that the box was in Halashire, it was not a trap. The Hellknight Armiger Inika Avondale was instructed to take the group to the port so they could be on their way.
Just as the sun set on Korvosa, the covered wagon arrived at the dock. There were a number of ships in port, loading people on board as well as cargo. As they stepped out of the wagon, an assassin fired an arrow from the roof of a warehouse nearly 500 feet away and took Angard in the neck with an Arrow of Dwarf-Slaying. The thief died in the street. Sir Godric stood his ground and a second arrow whizzed by his head. Inika ordered them to board the ship, and with that they quickly boarded the Mighty Maiden.
Bosun Nirman and second mate Ungur , checked names off on a clipboard. On the deck, Captain Joseph Lorune introduced himself and just as quickly ignored the group. First Mate Serena took them to their rooms. With the demise of Angard, Sikali now had a room to himself, with Godric and Shen bunking together as well as Alyuin and Valarius.
Once the ship had left port, they found Serena on deck barking orders to the crew. She asked them why they were heading to Riddleport. Was it for the gambling tournament “Chase the Devil, Take his Gold?” Was it to examine The Blot? After some evasive answers she dropped the questioning.
The group went below deck to the mess hall. A man called Chef, who looked anything but, made them sandwiches filled with some kind of salted meat. While they ate they mingled with some of the other passengers heading to Riddleport aboard the freight ship.
Stefan Cerrohn, a older gentleman of leisure as well as a gambler, was heading to the tournament in Riddleport. Valarius played him in a game of Cayden’s Gambit. Each won one game apiece, which seemed to please Stefan. Not so much his large bodyguard, who Godric detected as evil.
A tiny young woman came into the galley with several scroll cases tucked under her arm. She got a sandwich and sat by herself, eating and reading.
Thana (the barmaid that the group freed from the Aspis Consortium compound) and Lasdow (ex-Aspis Consortium) sat down to chat with Godric as he sat with Sikali. Thana flirted with Godric before the two of them went on their way.
Shen quietly took his sandwich and returned to his room.
And with that, the ship sailed into the night for the twelve day trip to Riddleport.
