Episode 29 - Chemistry for Disaster

Chemistry for Disaster

General Summary

Hugo Powerfist reappeared on the wall beside Sir Godric and Ella while Reh burned up a better part of the remaining wand of Cure Light Wounds to heal Proteus Marin and Fjord. Buck maintained a lookout and noticed the smoke from the alchemical lab had turned dark black.   Godric carried an invisible Fjord to the entrance of the alchemical workshop using his boots of spider climbing. As he made his second trip to the entrance, this time with Proteus, he heard Fjord shout from somewhere deep inside the workshop followed by the crackle of electricity. Everyone rushed inside while Fjord continued to draw the attention of the ashblood grunts, an ashblood savage, and the drow alchemist who had been waiting inside to ambush whoever came through the door.   The battle looked like it was going to be over quickly when Proteus saw the drow and launched a fireball into the workshop to soften everyone up. His lust for vengeance against the drow drew him to focus on the alchemist. The two exchanged attacks - Proteus with his powerful magic missiles and the alchemist with her potent void bombs. In the end, Proteus fell to the drow's void bombs. Even in death, he was defiant and flipped the double bird to the dark elf before his life was snuffed out.   Hugo, Reh, Buck, and Fjord worked together to neutralize the alchemical compounds that the drow was weaponizing. With the workshop now disabled, the Guardians had completed their mission... though it came at the cost of Proteus.   Fjord carried the body of Proteus as the group left the workshop. Outside, they discovered a masked man and a black kobold sitting atop the recently dead bodies of a few orcs and drow. The masked man had come to collect a certain religious helmet that Godric had in his possession. He said he'd be on his way if they would simply hand the helmet over. Godric refused after detecting an evil aura on both the masked man and the kobold.   During their back and forth exchange, the Guardians noticed movement in the shadows a few blocks away. The masked man told the group that the drow were alerted by the white smoke now coming out of the workshop. They knew that the workshop had now fallen. Between their weapon shop being disabled and losing the library, the Guardians had now taken out two important drow targets and they were not happy about it. In fact, they were anxious to put an end to the Guardians before they could do any more damage.   When the head of a green dragon poked over the top of a nearby building, the masked man and the kobold decided it was time to leave. They fled, and the Guardians decided to do the same. Fjord signaled a safehouse to the south, and through smoke signals received a message that the safehouse was active and troops were standing by.   The group quickly made haste through Celwynvian. After stumbling into two drow ambushes and surviving a hail of magic missiles and a fireball, the group arrived at the safehouse where Kaerishiel and his troops were waiting. A large green dragon was also waiting, spraying them all with its devastating acid breath. The survivors of the attack fled unground into the bunker known as the Graveyard.   Led by an elf named Symas, Fjord and the Guardians took refuge underground. Godric channeled healing to the group as well as Kaerishiel's men. After several hours of rest, the Guardians and Fjord returned to the elven camp outside the city.   Fjord went to see Eviana and tell her of their success while the others went to the mess tent to eat. A makeshift marketplace had been set up with a silver-haired, silver-eyed elf named Con'dis taking orders with his Ogre assistant named Door. Con'dis was giving very little return to those selling items, although he was interested in the Lorekeeper's Orb that the group had. The Guardians kept the orb and sold enough items to get another wand of Cure Light Wounds and a potion of Cure Medium Wounds.   Fed and exhausted, the party returned to their tent. Fjord met them there and gave them a scroll that had just arrived. It was a message from Kwava, who wanted to let the party know that Shen Stroheim had safely returned from his second trip to the Devil’s Elbow and that he was now looking for the water from Earthfall crater within the city of Celwynvian.

Notes

The Festering Crater - During Earthfall, a huge chunk of rock struck Celwynvian and blasted a crater in the southern edge of the city. The underground spring that feeds the lake in Verithes Park bubbled up, but some contaminant in the rock tainted the water—or perhaps it was an effect of the myriad elven spells in the area erupting as the crater leveled buildings and wiped out ruins. A relatively clear waterfall spills into the heart of the crater where sluggish, sickly water churns.
