Episode 3 - I'm on a Boat
General Summary
Aboard the Mighty Maiden, the group kept themselves busy over their almost two week journey. Valarius spoke with scholar Winifred Aldysh, a young woman excited to examine Blakely’s Shadow, or The Blot as many of the locals called it. Alyuin seemed to bond with second mate Ungur over merpeople, fishing, and tridents. Stefan Cerrohn was confined to his quarters after being accused of cheating one of the sailors, and his bodyguard Simms was placed in chains for attacking the sailor. Sikali earned the nickname “Little Pirate” from first mate Selena. Thana flirted with Godric who told her why they were on their journey in the first place.
About two days from Riddleport, Lasdow wanted to make a decent dinner with his fellow passengers, as both a thank you for freeing him from the Aspis compound and as a break from the steady diet of salted beef. They all dined, and the party went on deck to enjoy the evening. Thana knocked on the door coming out onto the deck. She staggered out with her throat cut, a potion test tube sticking out of the wound. Lasdow came out wearing full plate and a shield, taking credit for killing Thana and introducing some interesting potions to the rest of the crew.
Thana rose as an undead monstrosity. Vilarius buried an arrow in Lasdow’s eye (double 20’s), knocking him overboard and sending him to the bottom of the sea. The group fought off the Thana beast and put out a fire that had inadvertently been started on the mast. A large portion of the crew had been similarly poisoned and had been killed by Piko, the resident construct, and assistant rower.
It was decided that the passengers should be offloaded along with one crew member who would get help for the ship. There was one life boat undamaged that could be used to get seven people to shore. The Captain began to suggest that he take it to get help for his ship, but his first mate insisted the passengers get to shore. Captain Lorune sent Ungur to get assistance from wherever he could, along with the PC’s and Winifred, or Fred as her friends called her.
Once they left the Mighty Maiden in the dark, they saw a speck of light in the distance. It was a fire burning on the beach. A fisherman (Jarold) was cooking some of his take. He had a tent set up off the beach. Another man, with wild hair and no eyebrows, sat near the fire while wrapped in a blanket.
Jarold and the man by the fire, Hugo, escorted the group back to the nearest town – Halashire, also known as Magepoint. They dropped Ungur off at a tower just outside of town, the home of retired adventurers Morthos and Arnaud. The rest of the group spent the night at the Inn of the All-Seeing Eye.
The next day, the group tried to find anyone who may have known where Angard left the Box. All roads led to the tower. Morthos questioned them before being convinced to hand the Box over. Once he did, the party left and once they’d reached the road, Shen gave the Box a shake. It felt empty. He pulled out a key and opened it, which sent the group to a shadow realm where four creatures seemed to be containing something within a large crystal. A misshapen demon attacked them, and the group fought it off. The crystal shattered and a golden chakram flew out and struck Godric’s shield. The darkness disappeared and everyone was back on the road. The chakram remained. It was put back in the box and locked away.
The next morning, a long table had been set up for the group. There were two people already seated at the table – Master Baretto and Kristalothan (Cleric of Desna). Pais (Wizard) was dancing by herself in front of a bard who happened to be staying at the Inn. The group was thanked for their service on behalf of Venture-Captain Shevala Iorae, and each member was given 200gp and a Smuggler’s Wayfinder.
Arnaud arrived with a large chest. He said that Angard had left some of his belongings. Since Angard won’t need it anymore, he thought the group might as well get some use out of if.
Shen thanked the group for their help and told them to visit if they were ever in Absalom.
Character(s) interacted with
Morthos & Arnaud – The Tiefling Wizard and Human Warrior, retired adventurers who still tend to keep busy. Sixteen loyal human guards, known as Arnaud’s Avengers, also reside in the tower. Though not part of the militia, they readily come to the aid of any villagers if so ordered by either of the tower’s owners.
Notes
This 60-foot-tall tower is just the first part of an entire castle planned for the site, funded by generous royalty who owe its inhabitants – the fighter Arnaud and the wizard Morthos – more than a few favors.
Inn of the All-Seeing Eye – This large structure is the center of village life, bustling with visitors from morning to night. A human named Gundigoot owns and runs the inn, with the help of his wife, their two daughters, and an array of servants. The food is good, with specials such as poached salmon and stuffed pheasant. The prices are a little more than you might expect, but they have no competition in town.
