Ivarsán Crown

Royal Family

The Crown of Ivarsá is an elven family, of the sun elf variety. King Arnau & Queen Elya are the regents, with the Queen having come from the Kingdom of Azith. They have three children: the eldest is their daughter, Princess Aderie, and the younger two are sons, Prince Vio and Prince Fiyero.

Ruling Structure

The King and Queen are the regents, and both hold equal power. Princes and Princesses have equal claim to the throne based on birth order; the eldest child is always the heir apparent and the youngest children will have claim to noble houses or other similar responsibilites; alternatively, they can marry into friendly kingdoms.

Laws

The Crown have final approval or veto power over any laws, but noble houses can create them for any territory they have lordship of.

Magic

WIP
Punishments for using magic for illegal purposes tend to be more severe.
Arcane Magic
Related: Arcane Magic The use of arcane magic is not strictly regulated, but some more lately want it to be. Certain types of magic, however, are more regulated — blood magic is illegal in all of Ivarsá; while necromancy is only legal with a license.

Immigration

Immigration is encouraged. Ivarsá is a large nation welcoming to other species and people.

Crime & Punishment

Serious crimes are assault, murder, and smuggling. Smuggling is fairly common.
Judges are often nobility or sages. Lawyers are not uncommon, but not accessible to everyone. They are not usually affordable and not provided by courts, or required of anyone. Limited magic is permissible in courts — truth spells, holding spells, etc. — but never as a torture method, and must be cleared with judges and juries.
Prisions in large cities often have ways of dealing with casters — they are silenced and restrained, and large prisions also usually have antimagic fields or ‘silence’ spells.
A common punishment for able-bodied people is to be sent to work as a manual laborer on a Navy ship.
Smuggling & Piracy
Smuggling is one of the biggest, more seriously punished crimes in Ivarsá, since they deal so much in trade. It’s still very common, and often goes hand-in-hand with piracy, another serious crime. But piracy is a different matter — it is considered by the Crown a severe crime at sea, and pirates caught in the act are sentenced to death, but a pirate on land who sells his ill-gotten gains via quasi-legal methods (paying taxes and the like) will suffer no punishment.
Well-known pirates could stroll into port and not be punished, so Ivarsá is seen as somewhat of a safe haven among pirates even though their flag at sea means an almost certain battle.
