Lost Isles of Häia
History
In 1336, Moritz Häia was a [nation] crown captain on normal merchant business to the West. But there was a storm ahead, and he decided to take a detour from the usual route — an area that was perfectly fine for sailing in good weather, but extremely dangerous in storms.
In the detour, the storm caught them anyway. Thanks to some enraged currents, their ship ended up way further south than intended — in uncharted waters. They knew they weren’t going to make it to their destination, and they didn’t know how far they were from home. They could figure it out eventually... but not on limited supplies. Then, Moritz noticed: far away, but close enough that they could reach it, was some land. It was their best bet to go there, in order to survive, and once they were there they could figure out where they were.
They arrived at the cluster of islands, and the one they were on at least seemed unpopulated, but it worked well enough for them. Captain Moritz claimed them for [nation] and named them the Isles of Häia. The crew managed to gather supplies and locate themselves; then went back home. Some stayed behind to attempt to make a settlement and explore further.
Upon Häia's return, the Crown sent another fleet to check it out under Captain Häia’s direction. They found it the isles, and the people were safe and settling, so they decided to send send more ships over with further people and supplies. Moritz stayed behind.
However, after that... the other ships couldn’t find the islands. They had seemed to just.... disappear. they were lost.
There was just no land where Moritz Häia had said there was, even though an expedition had confirmed it; and he himself could not direct them.
They couldn’t find the islands for over a hundred years.
Eventually, a very small fleet showed up at [nation], captained by a young woman with a strong resemblance to the late Moritz Häia. She called herself Lunell Häia, and said she was his granddaughter, and that the islands could be found again. She was asked to elaborate, but she would not. She simply asked for a fleet to follow her to the isles.
There they were. The Lost Isles of Häia. Where they had searched before. They just.... were back, suddenly.
Lunell asked for no reward or recognition aside from a title, like her grandfather, and to be able to live a peaceful life in the mainland. She gave no further explanation; said she couldn’t. But there was a civilization in the Isles, and it generally seemed to be thriving and loyal to [nation]’s crown, so they were happy with it.
That lasted around sixty years. The 'lost isles,' stuck, but slowly [nation] lost control of them and they became an independent place. Today, they are their own nation; a hub of activity, rumors, and sailors.
The mystery happened such a long time ago, and [nation] was comprised of mostly humans, that they believe that no one alive really knows why the isles were lost — if anyone really knew in the first place.
