Lord Vorliss, Baron of Rocha
A handsome, if somewhat vain man in his youth, Vorliss was once heir to the throne of Rocha, but he threw it all away for love. He fell for a beautiful female warlock named Alastra, who brought him into the fold of her patron, the dark lord Krytuss. This was at a time after the Sundering, yet before Krytuss became trapped in the ice of the Demon Isles. His lover's low class would not allow for a royal marriage, so Vorliss took himself out of the line of succession, joining the royal guard (as "first sword") instead. Some say Vorliss also secretly became a warlock of the same order as his lover, with Krytuss as his dark patron. Vorliss' lover desired the power of the gods themselves, and convinced him to challenge Krytuss for it. But it was a trap. Though he loved her with all his heart, she merely used him as a pawn in her bid for power.
Lord Vorliss died communing with his god, attempting to overstep the bounds of his station. He challenged Krytuss, going so far as to threaten the god of corruption if he didn't get what he wanted. For this he was struck down.
What happened next is open to debate, as the story is told several ways. Some say Krytuss brought him back as a Deathlock (Mastermind), as punishment for his presumption. Others say he returned as a Death Knight, cursed for eternity for having broken his royal vows (vows that are "sealed" by the gods, in this case also Krytuss).
Whatever the case, now Vorliss owes the Lord of Corruption a far greater debt. And Krytuss desires his minion to raise him from his icy slumber. Vorliss interprets Krytuss' edict through the aquisition of power to be used towards this purpose.
For her part, Vorliss' greedy lover Alastra escaped his undead wrath by (allegedly) killing herself, sending her soul to hell. Ever since, Vorliss' has searched out a surrogate for her affections. Zelna is the current object of his desire. If he can have his “Baroness” by his side, their combined power, along with their undead army, will add thralls to his dark lord cause. Keep in mind Krytuss wants to supplant his own brother Rytuss (the actual lord of the dead) and take over his domain as well.
