Servitors of the Gods

The "Created" Races

It is widely held that at the dawn of time, Mount Celene descended from the heavens and touched down on Terra Gothenya, creating ripples in the land, shifting tectonic plates, and generally creating the conditions for life as we now know it.   Prior to Celene, it is also believed that but a few of the known intelligent species roamed the land. In fact, the only two indigenous species (those without either an alien origin or the result of genetic mutation) are thought to be the thri-kreen and humans.   But where does that leave the wide variety of remaining species? These would seem to fall into two distinct categories. The first being those who came with Celene, and acted as servants to the gods. The second, races that were intermingled with man to create a hybrid race, as well as other genetic experiments performed once the gods encountered the various fauna of their new home.   Of the servitor races, there is much conjecture. One of the only species with a racial memory that can be even remotely trusted is the Solti high elves. They claim to have been created by the gods as a helper and monitor race, tasked with overseeing the affairs of the divine while their lords slept (for the long journey down from the heavens). They claim to have been created by the divinities of good, specifically their elven gods.   The dwarves are also said to be children of the gods, having been formed to create "Godshome," or Mount Celene, using their almost divine crafting abilities in the process.   The goblinoid races are alleged to be the dark mirror of the elves, having been given life by the divine lords of evil to serve them much in the same manner in which the elves served the lords of light.   Gnomes are similar to dwarves, but were specifically designed to create and upkeep any technical mechanisms within Mount Celene.   The mutant races are as follows:   Orcs are mutant hybrids, genetically altered from experiments mixing both goblinoids and elves (or sometimes humans).   Halflings are also genetically mutated pairings of elves and gnomes (perhaps even dwarves).   Dragonborn are made from the magical manipulation of dragon eggs of all different colors.   Tieflings and Aasimar are both recent races, born of The Sundering, and their history is chronicled in their racial entries.   Changelings are a special edge-case, in that they allegedly hail from Mount Celene, but began life as an infectious, alien fungus or mold that managed to merge with human subjects, the females of which became pregnant with new life. What they gave birth to, having no apparent father, were creatures that looked somewhat human, but who were able to modify their shape and appearance. These children of alien symbiote and human are known as Changelings.   Minotaurs are the result of the magical manipulation and hybridization of different bovine types and humans. They follow the same pattern as many of the "non-intelligent" (or at least non-bipedal) magical species "released" into the wild, such as the Chimera and the Manticore.   Dragons and Giants fall into a special category. They are the "Titans" of the gods. It is said that when Celene touched down, it first disgorged the dragons and giants to prepare the world for the coming of the gods. And for a long time, all pre-historic and thus not properly documented, they were the dominant species on Gothenya. Legend has it that they became too powerful and their domains grew too large. This increased to the point that they thought they could rival the gods, their creators, themselves. This caused a reaction from the divine so great that it decimated their numbers (both draconic and giantkin) to near extinction. Today, the former titans have little land to themselves, and they tend to shun society at large, fearing further repercussions from the gods.
