Creating Your Character

So you're thinking about your (next) character for the Rosewood Marches, great! Here's the place where you can find all of the information needed. Be sure to let me (the DM) know who and what your character is and to make sure they're in the right location. You don't need to do this beforehand but thinking about it is recommended! When you attend a Session 0 you can discuss your character with the DM and they will be able to help you with any questions, if you don't have the chance to be there at a Session 0 make sure to come a half hour early to a session you're planning on playing. This is also useful for new players as the DM can help you get things setup for your character!

0. Tools

We primarely use DnDBeyond, normally you can get a link which has all the source book materials. And it will also do all of the complicated math for you! But feel free to use the sourcebooks and paper or fill in a character sheet on WorldAnvil. Make sure to be able to access your character sheet without your laptop or pc.   The D&D sourcebooks (or pdf's) come in handy but aren't necessary to create your character. And you're also expected to know what your character can do, especially the higher level you get (I don't know All the rules).

1. Base Rules

  1. You can use Customize Your Origin from Tasha's Cauldron of Everything.
  2. We will be using XP as a leveling up system.
  3. Hit points type will be fixed. No rolling for HP but instead taking the average (rounded up).
  4. Use prerequisites for feats and multiclassing.
  5. We use Variant Encumbrance and count 50 coins as 1 lb.
  6. SCoC is banned, except for Owlin

2. Race

You can take a custom lineage or choose one of the races from the official published sources (excluding large races). Keep in mind you are (most likely) not from this world so your race may have different customs in the world than you have and other players may have a disposition towards you.

3. Ability Scores

We use point buy. It eliminates chance and cheating and allows for the most choice.

4. Class

Because of the way the campaign is organized, party composition comes second to what you want to play. Don't take into account too much what others are doing and keep in mind you can always multiclass.   You can use the optional class features from Tasha's. But don't expect me to know them by heart. And you cannot play a cleric, unless you have a very specific idea that fits my criteria. Divine magic is unheard of in Gran Kora. Same for Divine soul sorcerer and similar subclasses.

5. Background

Choose any two skills, and choose a total of two tool proficiencies or languages. We can discuss your backstory if you have any specific ideas but most importantly your character must have died and unless you're playing a Reborn from Van Richten's Guide to Ravenloft, you will have forgotten most of your life leading up to your death. The campaign starts with you waking up in a new, strange world.   Make sure to make your character motivated to explore or have other goals inside the campaign. Because this is a player driven campaign, the players need to have goals and decide where to go and what to do.

6. Equipment

You have just awoken in the new world. So you do not have any equipment or gold. You awaken with the clothes you wore when you died, which you can choose freely. You will easily obtain essential items for spellcasting and fighting; such as a spellcasting focus, weapons and armor; during the campaign.

7. Homebrew

I use plenty of homebrew sources and have written quite a bit of content myself. I'm willing to write and tailor homebrew to achieve what you desire from this game. Alternatively, if I have time I might approve your or someone else's hombrew. Make sure to double check if you're using homebrew on dndbeyond that it is allowed.
