Koghînalgaz

Koghînalgaz is the fastest growing Mountainhome with a booming economy, thanks to the unique subsurface ecology found in its caves. 100 meters below the surface, an aquifer spills out into an extensive cave system that was somehow colonized by living things despite being completely cut off from the surface. Here, the Khôginaz Lichen has been found growing on the cavern walls that yields a richly hued a blue-purple dye. This dye has become Koghînalgaz' primary export and has contributed to fantastic growth. The underground cave system has been expanded and additional lichen farms have been seeded by Dwarves hoping to export more dye.

Demographics

Total population 32,000    60% Dwarven  15% Gnomish 15% Human  10% Halfling    The city is notable for its sizeable Halfling population. Many Halflings fled east after the conquest of Centralia and the North, but their agriculture-focused generational knowledge has found little use in Dwarven society. Here in Koghînalgaz, the Halflings have found a niche in underground farming, earning them an important place in the city's economy and culture.

Government

The founding Borghalkâz noble house was granted a kingship by the High King in EY 101, and rules the city more or less autocratically. However as the city's incredible growth continues, fueled by immigration from Verdonese occupied lands, the Guilds have begun to gain more power and demand a representative forum for the citizens and denizens (and themselves) to have a say in governance.

Defences

Dwarven garrison force of 350 occupies a fort built around the settlement's entrance. City guard numbers 125.

Industry & Trade

The valuable Kôghinal dye that is farmed in the underground cave system is the center of the mountainhome's trade and industry. The lichen and accompanying insect ecology must be strictly managed, especially in the artificial expansions, in order to ensure optimal growth. The raw lichen is brought up to the main caverns via elevator where it is processed by boiling, aging, and chemical treatment into dyes. The traditional Dwarven artisan and blacksmith industries also exist and are beginning to thrive. Trade caravans from the Free Cities arrive frequently and are serviced by an extensive merchant guild, selling finished dyes and other products that are sold to the Empire via the Free Cities.

Infrastructure

Several magicite-powered elevator shafts lead down to the farming caverns below. Running water was added to the settlement's infrastructure in EY 70.   After heavy banditry on the road leading south, security was increased to safeguard the valuable goods coming and going along the route towards Thorangar Utkarnat.

Guilds and Factions

The city's traditionalist and authoritarian Stonewarden-aligned ruling family frequently clashes ideologically with the ever-growing Steelbeard elements in its population. Significant Xethic Faction activity has begun to exploit and exacerbate these divides, and recently a riot went so far as to shut down production.

Geography

Koghînalgaz is carved around a 750 meter wide open space, and a lower tier is in process of being carved out below. The city's Warrens district is rather extensive and shelters many immigrants in cheap and cramped spaces.
