Ley Nexus

A Ley Nexus, also known as a Magical Convergence, is a phenomenon where streams of magical energies within or outside of the plane cause reality to become very slightly unstable in a given area. These effects are normally quite benign, but can allow the nether between planes to be traversed more easily. The initial formation of a Ley Nexus creates Magicite out of non-living material in the area. Normally this happens about 10 feet below the surface but can also occur in small localized bands at the surface along the converging paths of magic, a sign sought by Magicite prospectors. Atmospheric phenomena such as localized weather, aurora effects, ball lightning, and Lay streamers (St Elmo's Fire) are known to take place at Ley Nexi.

Localization

Magical Convergences can last anywhere from 2 hours to hundreds of years. Many cities are purposely established near permanent or periodic Magical Convergences, however they are generally not built directly under them because of the increased risk of fire (Kalliathissa  is a notable exception).
A Ley Nexus can be nearly any geometric shape and do change shape and orientation unpredictably over their lifetime, but their geometric center remains about the same within a radius of +/- 15 feet.
Magical Convergences are usually between 1,000 feet and 1 mile in radius. Magicite veins normally form along the central axis of the Ley Nexus with secondary branches extending along the original intersecting Ley Lines (defined simply as a "stream of magical energy involved in a magical convergence").
The location of future Magical Convergences are nearly impossible to predict because the mechanisms behind them are not well understood, at least by humans. However it is well known that many Magical Convergences have a period of repetition or at least are likely to recur in the same area. For this reason Magicite Refineries and storage facilities are often built on former Lay Nexus sites as the area becomes valuable for the purpose of charging "spent" Magicite.

Note: The term "Ley Nexus" is used colloquially to describe a specific given occurrence at a point in space and time, however the term "Magical Convergence" is preferred as a scientific name for the phenomenon.
