Snow Elf
The traveler tramped slowly through the snow, buffetted by the frigid, arctic breeze. Nearing the top of the ridge he peered out, shielding his eyes with his hands. There on the horizon he could see his destination, a cluster of jet black stone towers, lit by orange green and yellow crystals in the waning light. Along the ridge from the west, a reindeer approached surmounted by a tall figure. The traveler paused a moment, then turned west to hail this stranger.
The mounted humanoid’s staff shone suddenly with light, and as the traveler approached he saw it illuminate a mane of long, fine blue white hair and a long face with pale ivory skin and pointy ears. Unaffected by the elements, the Snow Elf wore little more than a black fur cloak with his face and hands exposed to a wind that threatened the Traveler’s own extremities with painful frostbite from just minutes of exposure.
As the Snow Elf neared, the reindeer snorted and came to a halt. In a voice that boomed above the northern gusts he hailed the traveler:
“Xethinne Innan— may warmth secure you, shivering one. What business have you in our unwelcoming land?”
The Snow Elves are a High Elven subset who have learned to live in the harsh conditions of the Aurora Glacier. They have been neutral in all the wars of the North and have accepted the protection of the Empire and Magocracy’s oversight. Of all the Elves, they have been shown to be the least magically advanced, but even so their assistance has advanced Empire magic by a great leap. Some Snow Elven adventurers have begun to leave Aurora City to explore the vast lands to the south and seek fortunes there. Whether some divine omen led the Snow Elves to finally connect with the rest of the world— or they are telling the truth when they say the Empire’s protection is what allows them to feel safe doing so— is a mystery.
