The Dreamworld/ The Veil of Dreams
Existing parallel to the Veil of Time (which is why dreams are connected with memory of present, past, and future), the Veil of Dreams is a medium sustained, and created by the collective dreams of sleeping mortals. This Veil is an intangible border of the planes of reality along with the Veil of Time, and is a container for all imagination that is thought every mortal in existence. A record of imagination and thought if you will. Sleeping creatures cast themselves into the plane in idealized avatars known as lucid bodies, and their dreamscapes are immune to outside entry thanks to the very components of the veil. Like the the Veil of Time, methods of accessing this plane has only been known to the Primordial Children of the Watchers, the Primordial gods, in the time of the gods and have been passed down to their worshipers at the time through oral tradition, in the language of the gods, meticulously scribed to the letter, and past down over generations and over eons of existence. Only certain religions passed down from their ancient ancestors of thought, hold records of these scripts. Only then can it be understood by obtaining the power to understand the primordial language of the gods through synchronization of the planes of existence which were once gods in of themselves. Dreams can only be accessed through dreaming and even then, one only has a very limited amount of agency in the dream world. Dreams generate a cluster of dreamscapes that exist as a vapor (each molecule being a dream) over the ever lasting pool of ideas and desires. Each cluster of free flowing pools surround and propagate near every plane that the origin of each idea originates from. Some scholars theorize that nightmares are simply dreams that unexpectantly transition to another plane of reality’s cluster of vapor, corrupting dreams into the dream, idea, or desire of another being or mortal. It is also theorized that the plane of Pann may have some form of unintentional interference with Veil of Dreams, creating a region that will with guarantee, cause a nightmare.
Those who have have knowingly attempted to access the Veil of Dreams have suffered the same punishment as those of the Veil of Time. Theoretically, if you were to access one of the many scripts, and translate them using the language of the gods, the plane of reality you synchronized with will be the plane you will be absorbed into. Either that or through the judgement of Vaal Vatti himself you will be reincarnated into the body the dream, idea or thought originated from at its present state. (Meaning you can reincarnate into a nightmare :( ) Those who have been chosen to submit under the will of Vaal for this crime on the planes are called dreamers, set to dream FOREVERMORE.
Manifestation
Below are the ways in which the Veil of Dreams manifests itself:
1. Dreamlight
Phenomenon: At twilight and just before dawn, a soft, otherworldly light known as Dreamlight suffuses the air. This light is a blend of deep indigo, silver, and faint gold, casting an ethereal glow that seems to blur the edges of reality. Under the influence of Dreamlight, shadows appear longer, and the distinction between the real and the imagined begins to fade. It is during this time that the boundaries between the waking world and the Dream Realm are at their thinnest, allowing dreams to seep into reality.
Reason: The Veil of Dreams becomes more permeable during these liminal hours, allowing the energies of the Dream Realm to interact with the physical world. The Dreamlight is a visual manifestation of this blending, hinting at the proximity of the dream world.
2. Dreamspires
Phenomenon: In certain areas of Grathos, tall, spiraling formations of mist or cloud known as Dreamspires rise from the ground or hover in the sky. These spires are often tinged with hues of lavender, pink, and azure, and their shapes are constantly shifting, resembling the ever-changing nature of dreams. The air around a Dreamspire is thick with a drowsy, almost hypnotic aura, and those who venture too close may find themselves slipping into a deep, dream-like state where the line between reality and fantasy blurs.
Reason: Dreamspires are focal points where the Veil of Dreams is particularly thin, acting as conduits between the Dream Realm and the physical world. They are often found near places of great natural beauty or emotional significance, where the power of dreams is strongest.
3. Lunar Phantoms
Phenomenon: On nights when the moon is full, Lunar Phantoms appear as ghostly, translucent figures that drift across the landscape. These phantoms are not spirits of the dead but rather manifestations of powerful dreams that have taken on a temporary form. They might reenact scenes from the dreams of those nearby or simply wander aimlessly, fading away with the first light of dawn. The presence of Lunar Phantoms is often accompanied by a faint, melodic hum that seems to resonate with the dreams of those who sleep nearby.
Reason: The full moon strengthens the Veil of Dreams, making it easier for powerful dreams to slip into the waking world. These Lunar Phantoms are embodiments of particularly vivid or significant dreams, given temporary life by the moon's influence.
4. Dream-Wrought Flora
Phenomenon: Certain plants in Grathos, known as Dream-Wrought Flora, are directly influenced by the Veil of Dreams. These plants have leaves and flowers that shimmer with an iridescent glow, shifting colors with the intensity of nearby dreams. The blossoms of these plants open only at night, releasing a sweet, intoxicating fragrance that induces vivid, surreal dreams in those who inhale it. In some cases, these plants can even alter their shape to reflect the subconscious thoughts of those who sleep nearby, taking on forms that seem almost alive.
Reason: Dream-Wrought Flora are naturally attuned to the Veil of Dreams, drawing energy from the dreams of nearby creatures. Their unique properties make them prized by alchemists and mystics, who use them in potions and rituals related to sleep, prophecy, and the Dream Realm.
5. The Whispering Winds
Phenomenon: In certain regions, particularly near ancient forests or secluded valleys, the wind carries with it faint whispers that seem to speak directly to the subconscious mind. These Whispering Winds are said to be the breath of the Veil of Dreams itself, carrying fragments of forgotten dreams and lost memories. The whispers are barely audible, more felt than heard, and they often evoke strong emotions or memories in those who listen. Some say that these winds can even guide travelers by revealing hidden paths or warning of danger through cryptic messages.
Reason: The Whispering Winds occur where the Veil of Dreams is most active, especially in places where many have dreamed intensely or where the boundary between worlds is particularly fragile. The winds act as a medium for the dream energy that flows through these areas, allowing it to communicate with the waking world.
6. The Dreamwell
Phenomenon: A Dreamwell is a rare, natural spring where the waters shimmer with a soft, pearlescent light. The water is imbued with the essence of the Veil of Dreams, and drinking from a Dreamwell can induce powerful, prophetic dreams or grant visions of past lives. The water has a calming effect, and those who bathe in it often find their minds clear and their spirits rejuvenated. However, the dreams inspired by the Dreamwell are not always pleasant, as they can reveal deep fears or hidden truths.
Reason: Dreamwells are points where the Veil of Dreams intersects with the physical world, creating a pool of concentrated dream energy. These wells are often found in places of great natural beauty or spiritual significance and are considered sacred by many cultures in Grathos.
