The Red Planet.
Fourth planet from the sun, Ares is a popular destination for intra-solar colonization efforts.
While it was once a barren and cold planet, and it's still widely barren excepting a few locations across it's surface, early colonization projects involving high density rods being injected into the planets core (the remains of said project are still visible on the surface, centuries later) it is now warmer. Perhaps too warm for some peoples tastes these days. Depending on where you are on the surface, at least.
Habitats generally stick to the norther and southern poles, with a sizable band on the underside of that. Not for the temperature, they aren't that extreme when compared to some of the other planets in the solar system, but simply for ease of access to the planets few water reserves. Humans have long since developed the ability to synthesize water, but that requires machinery that has to be transported, set up, and maintained by professionals. An investment worthy of only the largest settlements.
In the sands, an old project of humanity's waits, Exotic Machine Platforms, more commonly known as Exos, are Old World warmachines without a purpose. Gathered into tribes, they regularly clash and seek out conflict with the colonists of the red planet, inspiring terror wherever they go. Their exact motivations, be it bloodlust, survival, or something else, is unknown in it's entirety.
Most of the colonists on the planet are miners and industrial workers. The world has relatively little else to offer. Other than the secrets of the Old World buried in the sands, of course.
