Session 13: Meeting The Benefactor Report
General Summary
Our heroes started the session with a problem in the shape of five dark dwarves, gripping their pickaxes with a firm grip. One of the dwarves tries stealing the lantern of James but he holds strong. A hammering duergar enters the fray, and the PCs make decent work of the dwarven bastards, even if it meant a few players going down.
Delving deeper into the mine they opt to head west, making their way through the cavern. A swarm of tiny bugs attempts to abduct James, but they defeat the nasties. They pass the waterfall with little concern, and come across the chasm. Maku walks over as a panther and everyone else jumps, except for dear, naive, Hank. Who obviously falls. Luckily they'd secured hank with a rope and pull him up with little effort.
Deeper in the cavern and a handful of writhing sacks of flesh on the floor attempt to attack the PCs. They step over them and leave. Further south, they find the anus lake, but opt not to enter the water. Reggie finds another pathway and they find a 50ft hole down to another level. They climb down.
In this lower cavern, the sounds of weird fleshy noises fills their ears, as they discover this writing tar attached to the wall in the next room and make the wise decision to skirt around it.
Continuing through the cavern, the PCs encounter two disgusting piles of fleshy eyes, teeth and pure gross. The fight is long and difficult. A few PCs go down, but are revived. Weapons are swung, darkness is cast, and one of the creatures is destroyed. And that's when it happened. A solid natural 20 from the fleshy teeth guy on Maku Maku deals a critical 39 damage, enough to kill him outright. Oh god. Not sweet baby Maku. His body is dragged into the fleshy sack, and Maku's teeth are revealed on this mound of gross, joining the teeth and eyes party. The PCs completely mess up this thing and catch their breath. Only two remain conscious.
James spots a weird, mahogany door in the middle of the cavern and explores. Inside is a welcoming, elderly chap, that tells James he's been waiting for him. Him and Joe drag the bodies into the room, and the chap gives them two potions of healing to bring them back. They all sit, with mead and breads, discussing a new found partnership.
The gut reveals himself as The Benefactor. He offers to bring back Maku, but they'd need to offer something spectacular for that to happen. And it turns out Maku doesn't want to return. Who knew.
He asks them to keep hold of the lantern, and he really just wanted to meet them. He'll need their help soon to stop a dark war that's right on the doorstep of this realm, but no one can even tell. They talk for a while, and then he leaves them to it. He says there's a way out near here. As he leaves, the plush study returns to be a creaky old room, and all of them feel a presence reaching out to them as they level up. Cool.
