Treasure hunters, curses, and pirates

The Crew of the Four Winds
  • Whilst investigating Raven Ridge you encountered the crew of the Four Winds, which consisted of...
The Captain, a drow male
A Bard, a half-drow male
A fighter, a duergar male
A Cleric of Bane, human female
A druid, deep gnome female
  • You invited them to parley, during which you found out they were searching for treasure (and the Cleric was looking for the Servant of Bane).
  • The Captain mentioned Albert and said the Greyhaven Elder had taken his sword.
  • Dr Egg broke the parley by attacking.
  • The fighter, druid and Clreic of Bane were all killed in the fight. The Captain and the Bard dimension doored to their ship. You followed them but they had already used a teleportation circle to escape.
  Valkur's Curse
  • Due to breaking the parley, Dr Egg was inflicted with the Curse of Valkur.
  • Whenever on a boat he had a nagging sense of unease and was constantly having clumsy accidents.
Confronted by the crew of the Four Winds
  • As you were leaving the throne room of the Black Hand Palace you were confronted by the Captain if the Four Winds, with his remaining crew. He called you out for breaking the parley and demanded the return of his ship, the body of the duergar, his gear, and the Amulet of Bane.
  • Morrigan offered him just the duergar body and a smaller boat. The Captain was not impressed.
  • You questioned his association with the Cleric of Bane, to which he replied that he didn't care about her. They had only worked with her to find the treasure, i.e. the amulet.
  • Parker offered one on one combat to resolved the dispute and the Captain accepted, with his beastmaster stepping forward as their champion. But Malenia refuse to guarantee non-interference and a skirmish ensued.
  • You once again defeated the crew of the Four Winds, and once again the Captain and the bard escaped, but only as far as the outskirts of the palace.
  • You chased them down and entered into another negotiation. You agreed to the Captain taking back the Four Winds, plus the duergar Bulwark and his gear, but you would keep all the loot from his hired crew. On the way back to the ships you learned their names, Trebla and Karlmacoy, and that they are treasure hunters, with no affiliation to Bane.
  • Trebla agreed to pray to Valkur, to see if that helped cancel out the breaking of the parley.
Finding out about Trebla and his crew
  • When back in Gull Bay (preparing to fight the Servant of Bane) you mentioned Trebla, his claim on the sword, and the Four Winds to Albert.
  • Albert was shocked and confused. He explained how he’d started his adventuring life on the Four Winds, but the captain was a halfling called Butterhill. He recognised Karlmacoy and Bulwark (who he mentioned died before), but couldn’t understand the captain being a drow. He explained how he took the sword, as he believed it to be a fair share of the loot and left the crew of the Four Winds.
  • You talked through all the evidence and concluded that Butterhill and Trebla are the same person, a treasure hunter who is not affiliated with Bane.
The legend of the Pirate Lord of Doom
  • Whilst in a few of the harbour taverns of the Sword Coast, you heard of the Pirate Lord of Doom. He and his crew were known to be vicious and mercilous. The tales spoke of how his ship, the Floating Dread, could disappear into the fogs of the sea, and the Pirate Lord himself is said to be impossible to kill.
  A Black Spot
  • While relaxing in the Rusty Anchor, after defeating the Servant of Bane and the Plague Monarch, Dr Egg receives a Black Spot from Bulwark, marking him for death.
  • The next morning, a raven brought a note for Dr Egg, which read “Dr Egg. I request a meeting with you to discuss the current situation. Bulwark does not know I have sent this message. I will come alone. Trebla.”
  • You scried on Trebla and found him in the Breastplate and Shield tavern.
  • Dr Egg went to find Trebla but instead found a hooded elderly halfling, who introduced himself as Captain Butterhill.
  • He asked if the Curse of Valkur had been lifted, as he had left an offering at the shrine of Valkur in Baldur's Gate.
  • He revealed his ability to switch faces, showing both the familiar Drow face of Trebla and his true pale blank face.
  • He reiterated that things are squared away between himself and the Protectors. But pointed out that Bulwark was not there when the deal was made. It's fair to say that he was not happy with the deal and seeks retribution for being killed.
  • He also explained that whilst things are settled between you, Bulwark has saved his life, and Karlmacoy's, on more than one occasion. So if Bulwark calls in a favour from them, they will be standing by his side. Plus he has many more people he can call in favours from.
  • Captain Butterhill made a proposal. The person who killed Bulwark on both the previous occasions is the same person, the Pirate Lord of Doom. His suggestion was for you to take down the Pirate Lord, as he’s sure Bulwark would erase his mark against Dr Egg. He recently found out the location of the Pirate Lord’s hideout, when he was investigating another godly amulet.
  • He told you his real name, Nyx.
Hunting down the Pirate Lord of Doom
  • When approaching the location of the pirate lair you came across another pirate ship, the Sails of Fear, which attacked you with cannons, weapons you'd never seen before.
  • In the Pirate Lord's lair, you encountered more mercenaries with hand cannons, the wrecked Floating Dread, which also carries a couple of cannons, and a couple of metallic construct creatures.
  • The Pirate Lord of Doom's entropic attacks were brutal. Plus he wore an amulet of Helm thay protected him. Just as you were considering retreating, you were joined by the crew of the Four Winds and they joined the fight against the Doom Lord.
  • After you defeated The Pirate Lord of Doom, you learned that the mantle was a curse due to taking sacred treasure from Maztica. You found a treasure map to it's location. Nyx took it as part of their share of the loot and Bulwark burned the map to prevent anyone else obtaining the curse.
  • You learned of one more pirate vessel from the cursed fleet, the Terror of the Waves, which Nyx offered to hunt down.
