Armies of Idee

Idee has one of the largest armies in the Iron League, A personal rift between Count Fedorik and the Dwurking Helgi the Hirsute means that Idee cannot count on any support from that quarter, and this has impacted Idee’s ability to draw warriors from its own dwarven and gnomish communities in the Hollow Highlands as well.

Each of the 6 castles in the Eddri Line

, which covers the short border with South Province, is manned by the following:

• 150 medium infantry with swords, wearing chainmail and shield

• 200 light infantry with spear and shield (levies)

Ekehold

is a key defensive position against invasion by South province, and has not only been stocked with supplies to withstand a potential siege, but has the following troops quartered here as well, where they can react to threats from the north or northeast:

• 1,000 light infantry with spear and shield (hillmen)

• 300 light infantry with spear and shield (levies)

• 1,200 medium cavalry with spear, wearing chainmail and shield

• 500 heavy cavalry with hand weapons, wearing plate and shield

A large force from Sunndi

has also been sent to reinforce the Ideean armies. These forces are encamped throughout the barony of Menst, and will be sent north come the spring, to help push against South Province, or assist the kingdom of the Iron Hills, as needed:

• 400 light infantry with sling and short sword (skirmishers)

• 400 light infantry with longbows

• 1,200 medium infantry with pole arms, wearing plate

• 1,000 light elf infantry with longbow and sword (skirmishers)

• 2,000 medium elf infantry with longbow and sword

• 1,000 light cavalry with spears and shield

The northern border

is patrolled by the remainder of the levies, bolstered by regulars and mercenaries. A typical patrol will consist of 150 infantry, 30 cavalry, and 50 crossbowmen, but larger forces can be assembled quickly if needed to reinforce the kingdom of the Iron Hills or the border at Ekehold or the Edri Line. The following forces are committed to the protection of the border to the north:

• 1,000 light infantry with spear and shield (hillmen)

• 400 medium infantry with swords, wearing chainmail and shield

• 300 medium cavalry with spear, wearing chainmail and shield

• 1,000 medium infantry with crossbows wearing chainmail – troops on loan from Irongate

• Rorik’s Free Brigade

is a mercenary company mostly made up of refugees from the Bone March and their sons, consisting of 1,000 light cavalry with spears, wearing padded armor and shield. Their colors are gold and red, and their symbol is a black sun.

Similar patrols have been set up in the northern portion of the Hollow Highlands, to deal with any attempt by South Province to invade via Sunndi:

• 1,000 light infantry with spear and shield (hillmen)

• 500 medium cavalry with spear, wearing chainmail and shield

Minetha

serves as the base for a large reserve of troops which can be deployed north, northeast, northwest, or eastward as needed; the heavy cavalry in particular is designated to head into Sunndi if needed to support their eastern ally:

• 1,000 medium infantry with swords, wearing chainmail and shield

• 500 light infantry with spear and shield (levies)

• 500 heavy cavalry with hand weapons, wearing plate and shield (knights)

• Three different mercenary companies

have been engaged to bolster the defenses:

• The Black Bulls

are based in Urnst, and consist of 600 heavy infantry with pole arms, wearing plate, plus 200 light infantry with spear and shield. Their symbol is a black bull on a field of white.

• Baren’s Boys

come from the Bandit Kingdoms, an have 400 medium infantry with hand weapons, wearing chainmail and shield; they have no identifying symbols or colors

• The Free Company of Redspan

has 600 medium infantry armed with pole arms, wearing chainmail. Their shields bear a red bridge on a field of blue.

Some 200 mercenaries belonging to the Sandpipers are stationed at Fort Haxx in the south, to guard against seaborn raiders and threats from the Great Swamp. The Sandpipers are based out of Dullstrand, and their troops are medium infantry with pole arms, wearing chainmail.

The Sandpipers’ colors are tan and black, and their symbol is, naturally, a sandpiper.

Finally, the capital of Naerie City is garrisoned by 700 medium infantry with swords, wearing chainmail and shield. In theory, these troops could be deployed as a reserve of last resort, but this is unlikely to happen in practice unless the circumstances were especially dire.

Medieval or pre-Renaissance Italian figures would be suitable for Idee, with mercenaries using whatever figures are appropriate for their home countries.
