Armies of Komal

The Malikate of Komal is little known in the Flanaess, but has considerable influence in the Baklunish Basin. A hereditary matriarchy ruled by priestesses of Istus, Komal is a constant rival of neighboring Risay, and the two often contest ownership of the Narrow Desert and its access to the further western parts of Oerik.

Orcs, and to a lesser extent, other humanoids from the Tyuzi Mountains (and beyond into the Orcreich) are both a constant menace and source of fresh troops to the Malikah. It is not uncommon for orcs of a tribe friendly to Komal to be sent to fight those of another, invading tribe from the mountains.

The Malikah maintains a private guard of superb medium horse, in addition to the light cavalry which is on constant patrol around the western and southern boundaries of Komal. Patrols to the north are infrequent, owing to the peaceful folk in neighboring Mur. Infantry are used both to garrison towns as well as to serve as steady troops when full-on invasions against Risay are undertaken, as opposed to the usual light raids and skirmishes that are a constant on the border.

As of CY 578, Komal has the following troops at the ready:

• 6,000 light cavalry, with lance and shield

• 500 medium cavalry, with short bow and scimitar, and chainmail

• light infantry

• 500 with spear and shield

• 500 with sling

• 30 elephants, with driver, archer, and pikeman

In time of war an additional 10,000 levies can be raised, serving as light infantry with spear and shield.

Arab miniatures from the Conquest and Crusades eras are suitable for Komali troops.
