Armies of North Province
The Herzog of North Province faces many challenges. Not only are the humanoids of the Bone March a constant threat, as are the seaborn raiders from the Suel barbarian nations to the north. Now Nyrond and Almor have capturing the town of Knurl, driving back the Herzog’s army, while the ever-fickle Overking in Rauxes must be appeased as well.
The armies of North Province are in two camps as they are brought up to strength after the losses of the last two years. The Herzog himself commands the right flank at Eastfair, where it can be used to either aid an attack westward into the Nyrondese forces occupying the southern Bone March, or northward to counter any attack by the humanoids thereof. General Hooglish (Cv8), recently named Commander of the Western Approaches (consisting of the Principality of Edgefield and the Marchland of Uskedge), is based out of Edgefield, and is constantly sending scouts into the Blemu hills to probe for enemy troop movements.
As of CY 578, the Overking’s standing armies are composed thusly:
The Herzog commands the following force, currently quartered in Eastfair:
4000• 300 light infantry with sword and longbow (from Bellport)
• 650 light infantry with spears (levies)
• 850 medium infantry with various pole arms, wearing chainmail (levies)
• 750 medium cavalry with lance and sword, wearing chainmail and shield (from Atirr and Stringen)
• 250 heavy infantry with swords, wearing plate mail and shield (from Eastfair)
• 300 medium infantry with pole arms, wearing chain mail (from Eastfair)
• 200 light horse with short bow and either sword or lance, wearing padded or leather armor (the remaining Uskwardens; see below)
• 500 medium infantry with halberds, wearing chainmail (from Highlander and Stringen)
• 200 heavy cavalry with lance and sword, wearing plate armor and shield (knights from various principalities)
General Hooglish’s troops
, currently based in Edgefield:• The Red Brothers:
a mercenary company with 500 medium foot with spears, wearing chainmail• 200 heavy cavalry with lance and sword, wearing plate armor and shield
• 1,000 light infantry (levies) with spears
• 1,000 light infantry (levies) with various pole arms
The normal strength of North Province’s army is approximately 10,000, drawn from the forces of his princely vassals. The recent reversals in the Bone March have depleted some of that strength, but the recent arrival of reinforcements from the Sea Barons, combined with new levies and the hiring of mercenaries, have brought the army back up to almost full strength.
Because the Herzog has mobilized the full armies of the North Province, few troops remain to the vassal princes, save those use in garrisoning castles and towns. The normal peacetime strength (if North Province can ever really be said to be at peace, given the raids of the barbarians and the pressure from the humanoids of the Bone March) of the various vassal princes is as follows, but it should be remembered that almost all of these troops have either been recently destroyed or are currently serving in the armies based in Eastfair and Edgefield:

• The Uskwardens:
500 light horse with short bow and either sword or lance, wearing padded or leather armor. Their colors are gray and white, and their symbol is a yellow bow and arrow. They normally patrol along the Tessar Torrent on the watch for humanoids crossing the river to raid into North Province.North Province normally maintains large garrisons in its fortifications and towns, particularly on the coast to deter raids by the northern barbarians. Many of these garrisons have been reduced or stripped of men entirely, in order to bring the field armies up to strength, a state of affairs that has especially left the coastal towns on edge, dreading an attack by northern barbarians. Those garrisons that remain include the following (fortified positions are indicated with an asterisk):
