Armies of Onnwal

Onnwal’s strength lies not with its army, but with its navy. Indeed, a mere two years ago, the Szek of Onnwal could only count on 1,600 men in his regular army, plus a militia of uneven quality and uncertain numbers. Since then, however, in the face of threats from South Province the army has nearly doubled in size, and training of the militia has been undertaken with a more professional attitude.

As of the end of CY 578, the army of the Free State consists of the following, not including the sizeable numbers of marines used aboard its large navy:

• 1,000 light infantry with spears and shields mustering at Kildeer and Bauldrenn in preparation for moving eastward next spring

• 1,200 medium cavalry used as a mobile coastal defense force against seaborne raiders; all have spears and wear chainmail and shield

350 in the Eastern Marchlands

400 in the Storm Coast

200 in Bergard

350 in Gilderond

800 medium infantry with pole arms, wearing chainmail, disbursed about the nation thusly:

• 200 in Kildeer

• 200 in Sornhill

• 250 in Scant

• 150 in Longbridge

In addition, a national militia made up of all males between the ages of 15 and 45 is in training, consisting of 4,000 troops which will be able to be called up in less than a week. These troops should be treated as regulars rather than levies due to the training they receive.

• 2,500 light infantry with spears and shields

• 1,500 medium infantry with longbows

Gnomish and dwarven troops from the Headlands are discussed below under Irongate.

Ideally medieval Italian figures could be used for Onnwal, but any feudal era medieval figures would be suitable to represent Onnwal on the table.
