Armies of the Duchy of Urnst
Even though the interior of the Duchy of Urnst is both rich and peaceful, the Duke of Urnst has much to worry about on his borders. To the east lies the powerful kingdom of Nyrond, which is still suspected of harboring designs on the lands of Urnst. To the west and south are the humanoid and brigand-infested highlands of the Abbor-Alz and the Cairn Hills.
The army of the Duchy of Urnst consists of two elements. First is a trio of excellent border companies stationed in the west and south of the country, guarding against incursions of raiders, monsters, and humanoids. Second is a core of cavalry, split between the capital Leukish and Seltaren, which can be deployed in any direction to respond to incidents or invasion.
The
Border Company of the Eastern Abbor-Alz
is quartered in Castle Seh, and is nominally in charge of Nil Keep, although de facto garrison duties there are split between them and the Western Abbor-Alz. It is commanded by Captain Sir Bradon Wiltiz (R8), and its emblem is the bear rampant of Urnst, but in ar (gold) rather than proper. This company has the following troops:• 100 light cavalry with javelins
• 225 medium infantry with spear, wearing chainmail and shield
The Border Company of the Western Abbor-Alz
is quartered in Kelefane. Led by Captain Leston of Aros (F9), the unit emblem is the bear rampant of Urnst, but the bear is vert (green) on a field of brunâtre (brown). The western borderers consist of the following:• 75 light cavalry with javelins
• 150 medium infantry with spear, wearing chainmail and shield
The Border Company of the Cairn Hills
is barracked in Goldplain and Berenad. It is led by Captain Thorfin Greengrass (halfling F/T 6/9), and his lieutenant Brand Redblade (R8). The halflings in the company are loyal to Greengrass, who in turn trusts his duke with fanatical devotion. This force consists of:• 150 light cavalry with javelins
• 300 medium infantry with spear, wearing chainmail and shield
Finally, the Duke maintains a large force of cavalry, spread evenly between Leukish and Seltaren. These troops are used both as a reserve for the border companies, as well as a force to be used in case of an attempt by Nyrond to take over the Duchy, which is a perennial fear. This central reserve consists of the following as of CY 578:
• 700 medium cavalry with sword or axe, wearing chainmail
• 200 medium cavalry with crossbow, wearing chainmail or studded leather
• 100 heavy cavalry with lance and sword, wearing plate and shield (knights)
In addition to this national army, the nobility maintains large numbers of soldiers that can be rallied in a fortnight if needed. These are also used to garrison many of the various castles and fortifications. As of CY 578, the nobility have the following troops available at need, which can be fully assembled within two weeks:

Much like the County of Urnst, the Duke has been called upon to supply troops for Nyrond’s current war with Aerdy. 5,000 skirmishers, medium infantry, and heavy infantry are en route to Rel Mord as of the end of CY 578, and these represent the best quality troops, drawn from the armies of the nobles.
The troops of the Duchy can be depicted using Feudal French miniatures.
