Armies of the South Province

Herzog Chelor, only recently ascended to the throne of South Province, has spent the last three years consolidating his power, enlarging his army, and preparing for war against the Iron League, who were certain to receive support from Nyrond and Almor. Too, a show of strength was necessary against the Censor of Medegia, who had been wooing various petty nobles along the border, who needed to be brought back in line.

Chelor has split his army into two, one in the east commanded by General Reynard (F17), and the other in the west commanded by the Herzog himself. Reynard’s army has doubled back to threaten Idee after securing the lands south of the Telly River, leaving some 3,000 troops behind to ensure that the Prince of Nulbish remembers where is loyalties should lie...

As of CY 578, both standing armies are wintering at Zelradton, hoping to renew the attack on Idee come the spring, in conjunction with a Medegian thrust into Sunndi.

General Reynard’s forces

consist of the following:

• 1,000 light cavalry with lance and shield, wearing leather or padded armor

• 1,000 medium cavalry with mace, axe, or sword

• 500 heavy cavalry with lance, wearing plate armor and shield (knights)

• 1,500 light infantry with various pole arms (levies)

• 1,000 medium infantry with long bows and swords, wearing leather or padded armor (bandit/brigand “irregulars”)

• 1,700 heavy infantry with swords, axes, or maces, wearing plate mail

• The Gray Lads:

500 medium infantry with longbows, wearing chainmail. Their colors are gray and yellow, and their symbol is a black fist. They hail from the Duncoast and have a great hatred of dwarves, especially those from the Iron Hills.

• 1,000 light infantry with halberds, wearing leather or padded armor

• 1,000 light infantry with swords, axes, or maces, wearing leather or padded armor (various free mercenaries; exact number varies by up to 10% on any given day)

• Margen’s Misfits:

mercenary company with 500 medium cavalry with lance, wearing chainmail and shield, plus 300 medium infantry with crossbows, wearing chainmail

Herzog Chelor’s forces:

• 1,000 heavy cavalry with lance and sword, wearing plate armor and shield (knights)

• 1,000 light horse with crossbows, wearing leather or padded armor

• 1,000 light horse with lance and shield

• 1,000 light infantry with swords, maces, or axes, wearing chainmail and shield (various free mercenaries; exact number varies by up to 10% each day)

• 1,200 goblin light infantry with spears

• 700 orc light infantry with short bows

• 800 orc medium infantry with various pole arms

• 300 hobgoblin heavy infantry with great bows and various hand weapons

• The Ahlissan Grand Company:

800 medium infantry with various pole arms, wearing chainmail; plus 600 light infantry with short bow and sword, wearing leather or padded armor

• The Company of the Boot:

900 light infantry with spears; plus 500 medium infantry with crossbows, wearing studded leather

In addition, General Reynard has left 3,000 troops south of the Thelly River as garrisons, and some of these would doubtless be used to assist the Holy Censor in his assault on Sunndi. These troops will be found in units of 100-600, and will be composed as follows:

• 40% light infantry with spears and shields

• 10% light infantry with slings and round shields

• 30% light cavalry with light crossbows, wearing leather or padded armor

• 20% medium cavalry with swords, axes, or maces, wearing chainmail and shield

In peacetime, the regular strength of South Province has traditionally been around 5,000 cavalry and 7,000 foot, plus mercenaries. At need, the number of cavalry can roughly be doubled from existing reserves and mercenaries, while the number of high-quality foot can be increased by half. This does not count the personal forces of the nobles (which can number 15,000 or so), nor the standing garrisons of towns and fortresses. Noble contingents can be raised as follows:
