GRPG RuneQuest is a RQ Homebrew D100 based ‘classless’ system that uses an Adventurer’s Culture, Skills, Background, and Family History to define who they are. There are no theoretical limits to what skills or abilities any given Adventurer can learn or use. The game uses a ‘roll under’ percentile mechanism for determining skill success. ‘Monsters’ are generated using the same game mechanics as players - and can be just as nuanced – and monsters also have the ability to improve with experience.

GRPG RuneQuest’s combat system is dynamic and geared towards adventurous realism. Gaining success over an opponent causes damage and/or generates a Combat Action Special Effect. These special effects can rapidly turn the course of a fight. Fatigue and Combat Style also play a part, as combatants act and react to the constantly changing flow of battle.

There are three types of magic in GRPG RuneQuest. The most basic type of magic is called Common Magic and comes in two flavours: Common Battle Magic and Common Folk Magic.

  • Common Folk Magic is simple to cast, has limited power and is designed to help with the day-to-day life of the common folk.
  • Common Battle Magic are spells specifically designed to be used in combat, and – if used wisely – can turn the tide of battle in the caster's favour.

The second type of magic is called Rune Magic and comes directly from worshipping and sacrificing to the very real gods of this world. Rune Magic can be very powerful but the wielder of Rune magic MUST conform to the rules of the cult/god bequeathing the power.

The third type of magic is Spirit Magic which deals with the magic gained through communion with spirits and the spirit world. It is the magic of shamans and spirit walkers.

To sum up the game system:

  • D100 skill based game mechanics;
  • no levels, no classes, and no class limitations;

  • a fully integrated world.
