Day Star

At the darkest time of the year, when the days are shortest and the nights are long and the spirits of the dead are closer than ever, one can find the Day Star in the early morning sky. It appears shortly before dawn, bright and pristine, telling everyone that the end of night is near.   The Day Star is said to be Hribol, the herald of Lathander, the god of the dawn and new hope. He is only seen in the sky during the winter. In the summer, he returns to his duties to Lathander and the lands of Faerun, for the nights are not as treacherous then.   Do dwarves have tales of the stars? If they do, they don't tell them to outsiders. Their mythology says that all stars are sparks from Moradin's forge and leave it at that. Who would name a spark? It disappears in a second. People should have more important things to think about.

History

This star has been known by many names over the years. In the days of Netheril, it was known as the Fugitive as it ran before Amaunator, the sun god and deliverer of justice. Criminals use to be executed upon its appearance in the early morning sky so that when the sun arrived, Amaunator would see that justice had been carried out, and he would be pleased.   The elves had their own stories for its significance. They call this star Kreskele, the Chariot, for it draws the sun up over the horizon and leads it into a new day. For the few months of the year when it appears in the sky, the elves see this as a time for reflection, a time to ponder all the past events of their life. They tend to fall into a deep melancholy, but when the star no longer appears, they know that they can put such remembrances aside. Spring is coming, and with it time for new growth.
