Dweargen's Rough Riders
Dwargen's Rough Riders are a heavy cavalry unit of dwarves mounted on armored dire boars. Many fear the thundering hooves and snorting and huffing that comes with a Rough Rider charge.
Dweargen was a military leader of Citadel Felbarr from three centuries ago. During a time of orc uprisings, he realized that his forces needed a (relatively) mobile force to help control the battlefied, but he did not want to lose the heavy hitting power dwarves are known for. One of his aides suggested the boar. At the time, this animal was too small to be used effectively as a mount, but he began a breeding program that produced larger and even fiercer beasts. Within his lifetime, he was able to see the formation of the Rough Riders.
One of Dweargen's first recruits was a young battle maiden named Torgga Darkforge. She was an older relative of Grangungi Karlson. During battle, she had sustained a hip injury that made it hard for her to stay in formation with other heavy infantry. Dweargen realized that on the back of a boar, she would not be hindered. Her strong right arm coupled with her almost intuitive connection to animals helped her become on of the most famous Rough Riders in the last couple centuries.
Composition
Manpower
The number of Rough Riders at any given time is limited by the number of Dweargen boars available. They do not breed quickly, and the bloodline is still in development. The majority of young farrow will never grow to the requisite size. Some people have started purchasing the rejects as simple riding boars.
Equipment
The Rough Riders are heavy cavalry. The rider wears plate mail and has a small targ strapped to the left forearm, allowing to keep the hand free to help control weapons.
The boar wears plate barding designed to protect the head, neck, chest, flanks and ankles.
Weaponry
Rough Riders are issued halberds and light crossbows. The halberd has a slightly heavier than usual head and is desired for its versatility. The head spike can be used on the charge while the blade can be employed to chop during the maelstrom of battle. Crossbows are held in reserve and rarely deployed in battle.
The boar's helmet has special flanges and spikes attached along the sides of the muzzle to help better protect the animal's snout as well as increase the damage it can inflict with its instinctual tusk attacks.
