Art Center
The Art Center, also known as Humuhumunukunukuapua, or the Reef, is a series of buildings constructed to mimic coral reefs. The buildings are a rainbow of colors that are constantly changing as various artists paint and repaint the walls of the building. There is an unspoken rule to never paint over something that has been up for less than a week to give artists a chance to see their work up, but no piece of the Art Center has the same piece of art painted on its walls for more than 3 months. Inside the outer buildings are numerous art studios with ventilated areas for the more toxic paints, woodshops, kiln rooms, glass making studios, and many more, as community rooms for artists to take a break, relax, and snack in. These break rooms tend to come with kitchens as well as plenty of comfy furniture.
The main building of the Art Center is a multi floored gallery whose architecture is art piece itself, playing with detailed, high arches stretching far above visitors heads, frescoed walls that look like they’re a part of the reef, and swirling mosaiced floors. Within the gallery is no end of art, paintings, tapestries, sculptures in various mediums, glass, clay, metal, and more. Any artist can add their art to this collection, and pieces will stay there permanently unless the artist has attached a seashell to the side of the piece to indicate the piece is for sale.
Buildings surrounding the Art Center don’t escape the explosion of color either, as artists looking for a wall to paint where their pieces might have some room to breathe will spiral out from the Art Center in a mission to find such a canvas.
