Drugs of the Domes
The freedoms of Gyllis have allowed for a recreational drug culture to boom within the dome. Unlike the other eight domes, psychoactive substances are far less restricted. Many use drugs in an attempt to reach a higher connection with Shark God, while others use them because they enjoy the effects on their own. Here we detail two of the more popular substances to abuse.
Mermaid’s Roe, otherwise known as dart eel caviar, is a drug produced by soaking dart eel eggs in a vinegar solution. The eggs are then aged for up to two weeks. After the aging process, the vinegar is drained and replaced with a brine similar to seawater (on earth). In this form, the eggs look like translucent golden pearls with a radius of 10 mm. 20 minutes after consuming Mermaid’s Roe, the user begins to experience pins and needles across their entire body. An hour after consumption, the diluted tetrodotoxin paralyzes the user and induces them into a trance like state. All effects of the drug wear off after three hours.
Barnacle Ergot (Claviceps mare) is a type of ergot unique to the nine underwater domes of Aqyerius. The origins of this fungus are uncertain, but many speculate that it originally adapted to the underwater environment by attaching to various kelp species and even massive algal blooms. It was eventually brought into the domes through the irrigation systems as well as water leaks during transport between domes where it further adapted to grow on the crops the people of the domes were growing (particularly their grains). Barnacle Ergot mimics barnacle shells in appearance as a form of defense. Unlike most species of ergot, Barnacle Ergot produces primarily ergotamine as a repellant. As such, consuming Barnacle Ergot results in wild visual and auditory hallucinations that vary depending on the person’s mental state and how much they consumed. These hallucinations tend to last for twenty-four hours.
