The Box
The Box was built in 377 PC when Gyllis became an asylum. The purpose of the Box is to remove individuals who have committed crimes from the greater population so that they may have a moment to reflect on their actions. Time spent in the Box can be as little as two minutes or as much as 2 days. The Box is not for long term containment, that is what Gyllis as a whole is for.
The time given to offenders depends on their infraction and their explanation for their actions. Practical jokes often receive reduced sentences, provided that they were actually funny. The Box is not used for serious crimes like murder, those are within the jurisdiction of the Murder Committee. People can also put themselves in the Box for a time if they need a minute to collect themselves without having committed a crime.
The Box is actually a bit of a misnomer because it is a collection of several small containment units. The units of the Box share clear, glass-like walls and each have a small built-in bench. Each unit houses one and only one detainee.
Once an offender is put in the Box, their timer is started and their name, crime, and time is sent to the Announcement Committee. This is not done as an act of shaming, but to rather inform friends and committee members where individuals are to avoid creating panic. Being sent to the Box is also considered to be something of a badge of honor among the citizens of Gyllis, so these announcements are often met with cheers.
