Clan Danohel

The Clan of Ancient Glory, some call them. The Danohels are an ancient and powerful selkie family with immense systemic power in the Sonevan seas and which operate a massive multi-empire divine contract with the Lunar Pantheon to help contain the Empire of Runeva. Clan Danohel leads one of the most prominent factions of selkies in The Khilaia, with substantial power in the Motosui Assembly.   As a Khilaian Faction: The Danohel are a clan that has jumped through hoops to prove a distant blood tie to the old Emperor Milen, which is ideologically of great importance to them. They rally support from fleets on both sides of Sonev, as well as fleets in other contested and dangerous waters (such as parts of Larazel and Garadel), all in the name of imperial consolidation and military buildup. The Danohel see the Khilaia as an Empire that just doesn't enforce its claims on the seas. Powdermakers and local guilds trampelled by foreign markets tend to align with Danohel.   The Khilaian factional representative is Yahana Danohel, The Vengeful Accountant. Yahana is a stubborn and vengeful woman, prone to keeping grudges and particularly mad at the ascendant Clan Mikiraka. She is ambitious, great with money but not so great at making connections outside of her established circles. A capable martial artist and warrior, Yahana is the epitome of Danohel public relations. Yahana, for all her struggles, maintains a strong relationship with Clan Naimaka.   Clan Danohel also has the top position within the Selkie Circle of Elders, giving them preferential powers in terms of emergency subsidies and bounties. The Danohel Revered Speaker is Aimella Danohel, the Cheery Xenophobe, one of Danohel's more friendly but less pleasant members. Aimella acheived immense glory once as the Runevan war leader, but learned all the wrong lessons in the process and is now a callous and xenophobic old woman.   As Sonevan Naval Royalty: The Danohel structure much of their power around a lucrative and challenging contract they've now held for a surprisingly long time: the international god-coordinated containment of the militaristic Empire of Runeva. While Danohel doesn't do most of the fighting, they do transport supplies and warriors into the fray, and they do fight numerous naval battles and hunt for smugglers seeking to block the embargoes and blockades. This extends Danohel's power with across Sonev and into neighboring lands. Given this monumental task (and its consistent nature), Danohel is both wealthy and highly militarized. They hunt rogue selkies just as fervently as they do Runevan blockade runners; Sonev has a history of rogue selkies, that Danohel seeks to redeem with violence. Recently, Danohel merchants have started roaming out of Sonev and have participated noticably in the crossing from Garadel into Nafena. Where Clan Naimaka, their ally, fails with faith and trade, Danohel's violent cunning does the job.    Danohel's Viceroy, or master of logistics and community cohesion, is Nakwa Danohel, the Eerie Spymaster. Nakwa was involved in some daring escapades in her day, most notably an improvised spying mission into Runeva, and she's never been the same. She fetishizes Runeva's power and glory, and their surveillance state, which she imitates with her own private brigade of internal spies. Make no mistake, she despises the Empire, but she envies and is fascinated by it. She is well connected and well informed, and makes a point of constantly accumulating as much intel as possible, but her personality has slowly atrophied into a haunted shell of the woman she once was.    Danohel's Warmaster, or top executive in charge of commanding naval engagements with Runeva, is Laholi Danohel, the Imperial Gloryhound. Laholi desperately wants to be remembered, to be important, and he eagerly chases down Runevan fleets for the chance to prove himself in a blaze of glory. He surrounds himself with selkie imperial paegantry and builds his own legend whenever he can. He isn't incompetent for this - he respects his enemy too much to be lured into traps, and he has enough battle experience to take it seriously. If anything, Laholi tends to prioritize battle over politics because of his pursuit of glory. His family has encouraged this war to become his entire personality. He has an odd relationship with Nakwa, who held this position prior to him.    As a Dynasty: Clan Danohel is an eccentric clan. They have a long history of Lunar Cultism, which has evolved into lunar manipulation (the clan manipulating the Gods, that is), but the old cult practices are deeply embedded in their ways. Paladins are important to the Danohel, but where there are no lunar pacts the family deeply encourages monastic body training and martial arts. Everyone needs to be able to fight - a bookish kid is a future wizard, a sporty kid might be a swordsman or a master of the way of the open palm, a socialite might become a dragon sorcerer. The default is way of the open palm, which is believed to imbue a certain discipline and mental power along with the physical power of the art.    Some minor members of Clan Danohel include:
  • Sopa Danohel, the Head of the Trading House of Clan Danohel, a committed merchant deeply invested in their idealism and zeal that the clan is doing cosmic or at least international geopolitical good.
  • Hakusa Danohel, the Lunar Emissary who manages the house paladins and Lunar relationships, an enigmatic scholar-knight known for their pursuit of the odd and arcane.
  • Ruseda Danohel, Matron of House Danohel and a pious Navanan with some unusual (but internally consistent, to her) syncretecisms
Clan Danohel has estates in the Empire of Miuta and several other important selkie ports.
