Elector-Prince

Elector-Princes, or Elector-Princesses, are the highest noble rank below the Hainish Monarch themselves. There are only eight Elector Clans, each with only one Prince. While Elector-Princes must be directly related to their clan, the position is not directly inheritable; who becomes Prince is chosen from within the Clan by whatever means they see fit. 
An Elector-Prince is a peer of the Hainish monarch; they quite literally elect the new monarch from among their clans whenever one dies. In some ways, the Hainish government is made of these clans stapled together. 
The eight Elector clans are: Hunain, Neshelna, Hugelma, Savadan, DevHauzen, Dezuren, Geinmen, and Halar.
