Purgatory

This is the default afterlife or soul-holding-area for humans and Selkies, good or evil. It is a bleak, misty endless cityscape of bleak sharply-cut grey stone inhabited by terrible monsters. Some call it purgatory- others call it hell. Either way, it is easily the least pleasant afterlife for any sentient creature.   Purgatory is not the same for any two souls. Its layout is the same, but the mists churn out different horrors for every person. These are often based on the person's guilt, misdeeds, or negative thoughts that they've lived throughout their lives. These monsters will seek to painfully hunt and kill their target, but no death here is permanent- you simply lose your memory of it and re-form to experience the horror all over again. People without feelings of guilt or fear or histories of misdeeds (an incredibly rare thing, as these do not need to be substantial and fear and guilt are nigh-universal) as well as children under the age of 13 do not find themselves attacked. These children and 'pure souls' are much-fought for, as they do not seem to ever exist in the same room as a monster.   Violence is common in purgatory, and it is easy for the fear, guilt, and sin to pile on while you linger here. There is no fear of becoming a mindless shade, though- the regular memory wiping and constant need to think keeps the mind sharp. But beware, for some survivors are hostile to strangers after years of terror.   The only "safe" areas are the Zesheko compounds, which dot Purgatory's hellscape. Zesheko know of this terrible land and prepare themselves to form mutual defense communities here- and their tiny fortress outposts are well-prepared as they slowly wait for their communities to invite each other into Paradise.   This hellscape is not eternal, but was created to store human souls by Hidden Ones thousands of years ago for unknown reasons.
