Tragedy Magic

Tragedy magic (also known as the Art of the Weeping Mask), is often identified as "hedge magic", "low magic", or "common magic" for the fact that it is accessible to all- it does not require professional training, great resources, or a sacred bloodline to master. Tragedy magic is perhaps the most accessible (if rare) of all magical arts- it is simple to use, and well known across the rich and poor.   Tragedy magic is simple- by calling upon The Masked One (as according to any of the folkloric traditions) in one's darkest hour, there is a small chance that one's greatest desire will be granted (or contributed to in some way magically, if it is something larger and less immediate). This can only be done once per lifetime- after one's first invocation of the Masked One, it will never have a chance to work again.    Mechanically, Tragedy Magic works similar to a Cleric's Divine Intervention class feature: you roll 1d100, and if you get a 1, you receive divine assistance (often in the form of a high level spell). The DM may, under special circumstances, increase the range of success. This can only be done once per character.    Tragedy magic is the least taboo or socially unacceptable or all hedge magic- it is, to most cultures, less of a magical art and more of a rule of reality. It is a common trope in literature and media, and revered as one's Dying Rights by many. Only in Sonev are there any attempts to regulate knowledge of Tragedy Magic. In fact, instances of successful Tragedy Magic are actively recorded and honored by the Zesheko religion of Garadel, whose prophet used a successful tragic invocation as the founding moment for the religious movement.
