Virtues

BEFORE PLAY

During character creation, pick your virtues: Identify which of these virtues is important to your character. Your PC's race, religion, class, background and personality may inform this choice.   Choose up to five virtues. You can select the same virtue more than once. This means you are VERY brave, for instance. But in total, the number must be five or less (zero is OK). Each virtue is paired with a vice. If bravery is your chosen virtue, then caution (on the back of the card) is your vice. If caution is your chosen virtue then bravery (aka recklessness) is your vice.

DURING PLAY

Virtue cards: At the start of play, lay out your cards with their virtue side face up.   Call on your virtue:. When the player chooses to apply the virtue to a D20 (1) roll (attack/save/check), roll with advantage, (2) flip the card to vice side, and (3) hand it to the DM. Example: bravely negotiating with a dragon for the princess's release. NOTE: you cannot call on your virtue after you have already rolled the dice.   Call on your vice: Later, when the DM chooses to apply the vice to a D20 roll, the DM can flip the card back to you and have you make that roll with disadvantage. Example: cautiously sneaking out of the dragon's lair before he re-awakens. NOTE: the DM cannot call on your vice after you have rolled the dice.

AFTER PLAY

At session's end, based on each player's own judgement of the character's growth, they add and/or remove virtue card, but they are limited to five or fewer virtue cards at any given time.

This RPG mechanism is inspired by Kult's relation inspiration mechanism.
