Coinage on Hârn

Harnic Currency by Columbia Games Inc

Barter is very common, especially amongst the common folk. However, there is a robust monied economy on Hârn, especially among the merchant classes and the nobility. The typical unit of currency throughout Hârn is the silver penny (d short for dram), which is about 1/16 an ounce of silver, debased no more than 10%. Note, here are also no bronze, copper, electrum, or platinum coins in Hârn.

Worth roughly the value of a laborer’s daily toil, pennies may be broken in ha'pennies and farthings. Sometimes prices are given in shillings (12d) or pounds (240d), but there are no coins of this denomination.

Each walled city mints its own coins under royal privilege. Coins are usually discounted 10% to 20% outside of their native kingdom.

The coins of Rethem are severely debased and tend to be discounted as much as 50%. The Khuzan of Azadamere mint coins of exceptional quality and value. Dwarvish currency is always 98% pure and universally recognized and accepted. They are also the only ones to mint a gold coin, the Khuzan Crown, a rare currency outside of Azadamere.

Pennies are often cut into quarters called farthings. It is not uncommon to receive or give portions of a coin for inexpensive items or services.
  Values:
1 farthing = .25 of a penny (1d)   2 farthings ha'penny = .50 of a penny (1d)   4 farthings = 1 penny (1d)   12 pennies = 1 shilling (12d)   20 shillings = 1 pound (240d or £1)   Khuzan gold crown = 320d     Mercantylers often issue userers notes for specific amounts to avoid the need to transport coinage. These notes are usually only negotiable with other mercantylers and can be heavily discounted. However, anyone willing to take the paper can accept it, although will likely negotiate its value. The original issuing mercantyler is obligated to pay the stated amount on demand when presented with a note they issued.
