Longshard Quarry District Defensive

An excerpt from the memoirs of the surviving members of the Longshard Quarry District Defensive.   “When the rockquakes hit, they can be devastating. A shifting of the material that not only forms your home, but the structure your home is on and the encapsulating area that your neighbourhood is surrounded by. If you’re not having to avoid the falling debris, or dodge the cracks opening beneath your feet that, if you’re lucky, cause you to plummet to the layer below. Other times, they form openings that the enemy can take advantage of.   The goblinfolk have always attempted to get into the city to pillage our supplies and claim regions for their own. We hear regular reports of deep dredged claw marks on the outer barriers of the city. They seem to be getting more and more desperate of late. Our forces are spread thin ever since we’ve been cut off from our sister cities. We have no way of contacting others for help, yet alone more supplies. Our city is really only an overgrown quarry. Our lower levels have little left in the way of defensible natural rock. Have we become too greedy in our love of gold from selling off fine material? Have we overextended too many times into the deep without appropriately securing our position? Time after time we have been ordered to dig deeper and accumulate more wealth… but for what?   They’re back… I can hear them clawing at the outer walls again. They’ve felt the same rumblings that we have. Our barriers are not strong enough to hold this time. My brothers and sisters are weak already from the last incursion. We WILL hold them. We HAVE to hold them.   The rockquake hit harder than usual on that day. The liquid flames of the wall mounted sconces go dark as pipes are broken and fuel is lost. The frantic clawing of the outer wall stops as the wall is broken down.   “WE HAVE BEEN BREACHED. DEFENSIVE LINES””   The excerpt is one of hundreds of similar writings from all across Longshard that describe the events of the lower city collapse.
