Caravel
The Caravel is a very common ship employed by nations with developed shipbuilding industries like @Westwythe, Aparnovos and its successor states, Ulnost, Santa Alessa, and Sijmen Sur. The Caravel is a fast, maneuverable ship that is still able to offer respectable carrying capacity for its size. The hull shape offers good seakeeping without requiring the more intense commitment of timber required for larger ships such as Carracks. One of the Caravel’s greatest strengths is its adaptable rig, which can have varying ratios of square and lateen sails. This versatility allows it to travel on almost every type of waterway found on the subcontinent, from rivers and channels to bays and seas. The square sails are more suited to the steady, prevailing winds of the latter, while lateen sails enable greater control of the ship in shiftier conditions and allow sailing closer to the wind.
A wide variety of factions and organizations use the caravel; smaller merchants may base their operations around a single such ship, or acquire a small fleet. The larger merchant companies employ dozens of caravels in addition to their larger vessels, and lords and nobles either own several ships outright for both commercial and military purposes, or have the ability to levy them from their subjects. The Westwythian, Torellediri, and Fosowbrian Navies make extensive use of the caravel as a versatile expeditionary ship, especially for tasks which would not require the undue commitment of larger, more prestigious warships.
