Kena Lanu
A once bustling city, this large coastal metropolis has long since fallen into ruin. Now inhabited and controlled by a large number of Displaced, formerly a band of roving slavers. Their leader, Med'aoulu, made radical changes to the structure and nature of the city as a whole after becoming a Saint.
This occurred shortly after he took control of the abandoned metropolis, when he struck down a daunov'aði that had wandered into the city. Since that time, things have changed drastically, with all efforts in the city solely focused on a mining project involving an entity referred to only as the “One Below.”
History
Kena Lanu was once a bustling port metropolis, with thousands if not millions of inhabitants. When the time of darkness came, the city fell to ruin, but was so vast and sprawling parts of it remain to this day, despite the destruction cause by the war and unsteady earth. It sat, mostly abandoned, for centuries, before Med'aoulu came. He saw the potential it had, and began to set up camp, take his roving band of slavers and putting them - and their captives - to work on renovating small sections of the city.
Med'aoulu proved his mettle as a leader when an avatar of death - a daunov'aði, a towering conglomeration of bone and mycelium - wandered into the city, and he faced it down alone. In their fight, it struck his eyes, blinding him as he killed it. When he struck it down, something happened to him. In that moment, he was Sainted. In one socket, he grew an eye of bone, and from the other grew a jut of fungal growth.
Since that day, Med'aoulu's focus has been on some mysterious work below the surface of the city, which he and his men will only refer to as "the One Below." One silver lining is that since his change he seems to have freed the slaves they had captured.

I'd be curious to learn more about this city's history before the fall. That said, I like the clear plot hook/cliffhanger at the end! Also, the bit about small sections of the city being restored reminds me, in a good way, of the ruined city in Elantris by Brandon Sanderson.
