Newtlings
Witty and quick, both of body and tongue, Newtlings are most at home in the waterways of Miðgarr, though they manage just fine in the open air.
Basic Information
Anatomy
Newtlings have an amorphous form by nature, almost as if they are made up of the water from which they are born. They can shift and flow and distort their form, lending them a natural shapeshifting. They often take on the form of a small bipedal creature that appears aquatic, similar in appearance to an axolotl, in order to ease foundlings they are interacting with. There is no need for them to take this form, and it is not an uncommon sight in newtling communities to see a pool of newtlings gathered in a pool together.
Biological Traits
The newtlings were able to survive the time of darkness in decent numbers for one major reason; their flesh is highly poisonous to any creature that would want to consume them. Ironically, this led to Lærilbak having a penchant for wanting them as pets for a time in order to ward of the more dangerous river creatures.
Behaviour
Newtlings are gregarious and cheerful, with a streak of mischief that tends to present itself in harmless shapeshifting pranks. They will often take on the form of authority figures and those who are attempting to be imposing and mock them to take the wind out of their words.
Civilization and Culture
Major Language Groups and Dialects
The language of the newtlings is supremely difficult to speak for non-newtlings. It consists of bubbles and gurgles that newtlings are able to produce and feel from each other when they are in close proximity.
Common Myths and Legends
It is said that each newtling is born when a flowing body of water forms. The legend goes that for each brook that begins to babble, a newtling will spring up to carry on the other side of the conversation.
