Katablepites

Making up the heavy horns and scales of the Catoblepas, Katablepites, or Catoblepas scales, are a highly sought-after material frequently used in Cyclopean Jewelry and traditional crafts. While it can technically be harvested from the catoblepas while it is still alive, this is often-time seen as cruel and unnecesary by most observers due to the pain it causes the catoblepas, the difficulty it causes life for the catoblepas, and for the fact that catoblepas is frequently slaughtered for their meat anyway, allowing for easy access to the resource.

Properties

Material Characteristics

Catoblepas scales are hard, crystaline structures made from the same material as the beast's hair. It tends to be black, brown or grey in color and mostly smooth in texture.

Origin & Source

Catoblepas Scales are harvested from the catoblepas, an animal primarily found in the northwest of Lukhora. While they can be found wild, they are known to be domesticated by cyclopes, who use the scales prominently in their crafting and artwork.

History & Usage

History

It's difficult to say when the material was first used or discovered, as its use likely dates back to Lukhoran prehistory. Several artifacts have been found made from this material, including dagger handles and jewelry shards, which are believed to predate written records of the area. While not particularly common, objects made from this material pop up from time to time throughout history.

Everyday use

The most common use of this material is decorative, such as in jewelry or art pieces. It can also be used to make a number of more practical items, from tools and eating utensils to weapons and even armor.

Distribution

Trade & Market

While not hard to find in Aniketoi Cyclopean communities, catoblepas scales are a rare luxury item in the greater world. Makadelian merchants frequently travel through the Aniketoi region in order to acquire the material or goods made from the material, often times finding themselves confused regarding the trading customs of the Cyclopes.
