Dufansarl

DUFANSARL

Dufansarl is a city that despite having changed hands a few times has managed to turn rebuilding into a thriving industry.   Strategically located on the coast of Frostwater lake halfway between the Finnars and the Saxa, Dufansarl enjoys a privileged position in the trade within the lake. Ferries come and go to most of the other locations in the lake unimpeded by the ice of the north or the Finnar raids to the south.   For over a century, Dufansarl was under the control of the Thunor’s Eye, but when the powerful clan turned his Eye (pun intended) to the southern lands and the Inner sea it was left open to the expanding Gjallarhorn clan. And so, instead of raiding it one more time, 20 years ago Thorunn, The Warrior Queen decided to conquer it and keep it for her clan. Initially opposed by some of her own nobles, as the Ghallarhorns see themselves more as raiders than conquerors, she soon proved them wrong when the wealth from the now much safer trading routes started to fill their coffers.   Dufansarl has continued to grow and reinvent itself. After the Gjallarhorns secured their own trade routes across White Lake, Dufansarl evolved into a frontier traders’ paradise, fueling the jealousy of its neighbors.   It is said, and probably it is true, that Dufansarl’s founders were thieves. They refused to kowtow to a powerful thieves’ guild and were driven out. To this day, Dufansarl honors its shady founders by declaring pickpocketing legal within the town limits—which explains the “Watch thy pouch!” signs posted in various local establishments. Much of this ‘philosophy’ carries to other aspects of the city, which is known for shady deals, greedy traders, and crafty businesspeople.   On the other hand, the freedom and abundant coin have made Dufansarl a magnet for artists, bards, and other creative folks in search of fame and fortune.

The Wet Trout

Popular tavern
The Wet Trout, located near the docks, is the largest and loudest tavern in Dufansarl, known for its ribald atmosphere and rumor-mongering. A great chimney squarely in the building’s center has hearths on either side to warm the tavern’s two common rooms. The tavern’s current owner and proprietor is Nymetra Myskyn, Jotunn Sons berserker claiming not to be of Giant descent but of White dragon ancestry. Although she can be crusty and full of complaints, Nymetra is not discouraged by the Hellfrost, which she regards as a test of Finnarland’ mettle. An unapologetic worshiper of Hela, she supports Dufansarl’s attempts to appease the Frostmaiden with sacrifices.

The White Lady Inn

Inn
This musty old inn is named after a local legend known as the White Lady—a ghost rumored to walk on the White Lake, haunting the spot where her rich husband drowned. Rinaldo (Enro), a self-styled bard kept around to entertain guests, is fond of plucking his fiddle while recounting his tale: that the White Lady’s husband was a miser who kept his treasure in a heavy, locked chest that never left his side. Perhaps it was this heavy chest, suggests Rinaldo, that capsized his boat and sent the man to his sunken grave, or perhaps it was the fright of seeing his dead wife that caused him to capsize the boat and drown.   The inn’s sullen, elderly proprietor, Bartaban (human Saxa), has heard the enro's rambling far too often to be humored by it.
