Ash Grove

Before the Civil War, Ash Grove was a growing community that was expected to become a ranching center. After the declaration of Confederate Arizona, most of the adult male population traveled south to join Company A of the Arizona Rangers when it arrived in Tucson in February of 1862. This unit was forced to retreat, first to El Paso and then to San Antonio, before being mustered into the mainstream Confederate army and sent to Louisiana. In the end, only a few of the men ever returned to Ash Grove.   Currently, the town is almost deserted. There is a small dry goods store, but it is barely stocked.
